Re: Best Cleaning/Maintenence Practice for Scanner
Use a soft cloth dipped in water with very mild detergent, totally wrung and wipe. Take care to clean rollers and glass. You can use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) industrial grade and clean rubber rollers, if required. Dont use any chemical solvents. Paper is not good as it can shred into pieces and small piece can lodge itself in sensors.

Clean the two 'black dots' in the paper tray, just under the roller. They are actually paper sensors. Try 'page counting'. If this works, the scanner is okay. If the problem still persists, try reloading the scanning software.

What scanning software are you using? Once you initiate scan command, the software will ask for location (and format) where you want to save the files. After scanning, try & use 'Save as' command, by default it will go to where it is already saved. Alternatively, search for the file name under Windows.
Wht happens after the comp displays 4401 error? Does the system hang? If you can still use the comp, then forget it. Frankly I have not faced this error. But freak errors like these can be seen even if your OS files are damaged. Try reinstalling the OS in another partition. If the scanner works fine in the new environemnt, you can be sure that some files are damaged.
