I can't use the viewfinder. Nothing appears. The flash will flash but there's nothing but a black screen on the image when I check the card. I've charged the battery. Card doesn't have a protection switch. Any idea?
This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Thanks so much for this information. I've started the process through email. Thank you again. I'd never know of this issue. Canon has always been extremely customer friendly and this appears to be another example. Thank you again. Bill Wood
I just found that I have the same problem - the screen went from purple lines and a ghostly image to black in 5 successive shots! Thanks to the "guru" for the advice about the Cannon recall - I assumed that I was out of luck as it is way out of warranty!
Happy New Year

I have the same problem with my camera. Where do I need to send it to get this resolved? Thanks
I have a cannon power shot S500 and when the camera turns on the viewfinder is completely black with white lines going thru it. When you go to take a picture the picture turns out black. It is almost like a tv when the picture tube has gone bad. Also, I have a second S500 camera, and the batteries that I have will not keep a charge!!!
the canon shows good at power up but the view is just black with the view of some light
i have same problem and my Canon S550 camera does not work now.
i can show the pictures on CF card out but when take picture there is no immage on viewing screen.
who know how to solve this issue?
thanks,
I have the same problem. The LCD is black. After take a shot, the image is black. Also, it will complain low battery even I have fully charged battery installed.
I have the same black screen problem and as with the other comments would have had no idea that this could potentially be fixed by Canon without the info provided on this site. I've emailed Canon to get the ball rolling Thanks to all

I live in the UK. Sadly Canon UK are NOT so helpful. Their site says to contact a Service Centre - which I did. Unlike in the US, I have to pay postage to send it to them. I therefore phoned Canon UK to query this and they said that was right and that Canon US is different to Canon UK. I pointed out the inequity of this but the person was both unhelpful and didn't answer my question when I asked who I could contact about it - he put me on hold, then came back and repeated what he'd already said. I then contacted Canon UK via their website question link - and the link did not work for the first 5 times (NB even if you registered on their site, it seems that you need to fill out your name, etc again in order that the question is submitted).
Overall, I am not impressed. I will be fighting this and will post again here if successful:-)
same problem as the rest of you, help
