TV comes on predominantly red for 20 seconds then shuts off!
My set is about 3 years old. When I turn it on it comes up predominantly Red, then the picture starts to come in before going back to red and shutting off. The timer light flashes 8 times. I am not super electronics oriented so I called for service on Sat. Any ideas on what this is, and what it's going to cost to fix? (Sears repairman)

You most likely have a bad Red CRT, knowing the age of the set, I suspect all 3 are bad, thats talking $1200 to repair, I would call sony and see if they will do anything with it. (maybe pay for parts or labor?)

Video output section circuit fault. This fault can be caused by many reasons, and called technically 'one color predominant screen'. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Viewing it in "Mosaic" or "Magazine" will make surf easy. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience. Do a search by type in the brand name of your device at its search box and press "Enter". http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Mainly, loose solder terminals at the video output card can cause this. You have to look for it first. This car can be located at the neck of the CRT, will directly plugged to its back. Reasons for this can be read in detail by the above linked site. Surf it with type in "one color predominant screen"
The 46H84 has 3 CRTs instead of a lamp. Red, Green and Blue. Your red CRT is shorting out shutting down the set. Here is how you test that theory. Remove the speaker grille, there will be an access panel behind the grille remove that and you will see the CRTs red is usually on the left. hit the power momentarally to locate which tube is red. then power down and unplug the power cord. Carefully remove the tubes Circuit board. ( you may have to carefully slice the glob of silicone applied at the factory to get the circuit board off) Once you have the circuit board off the Red CRT make sure it isnt touching anything and try powering up the set. If the set stays on and the other 2 CRTs light up. That tells you the RED crt is shorted and thats whats shutting your set down. Let me know if I can assist you further.
3 blinks means the convergence circuits are shutting the set down. Usually the convergence ICs will take care of the problem, but I would recommend getting the service manual from the following link, as they will provide you free support to help you diagnose why it wont start as usually the convergence ICs wont prevent a set from powering up, unless another component in the convergence circuit has failed. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
Sometimes, in the Panasonic projection sets, one of the convergence IC's shorts out and draws so much current that one of the resistors next to it glows red hot. The computer senses the extra current and shuts the set back off. This is quite an easy problem to correct, but the set should be serviced by a qualified tech familiar with panasonic projection sets.
