Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC30 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I have a camera with the exact problem and when I called customer support, they told me that I have to pay $170 to fix it because their recall has ended in March. That's the worst customer service experience ever. Sony produces defective products and I have to pay for fixing them. I will never buy Sony again

Notice to Owners of Sony Camcorder
October 3, 2005
Thank you for your support and patronage of Sony Camcorders.
It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of Sony Camcorders that incorporate an image sensor device, CCD Chip, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition:
When the Camcorder is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder will show either a distorted image or no image.
We have determined that this condition only occurs to a limited number of units.
In its effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony has elected to offer a free repair to the owners of applicable Camcorders if the image sensor device, CCD chip, causes one of the above-mentioned conditions. Accordingly, customers who have a Sony Camcorder as outlined below and if such Sony Camcorder exhibits the above-mentioned condition caused by the image sensor device, CCD chip, may contact the special call center number below for free repair:

This may be due to the ccd. Sony is replacing them free of charge for certain models. Go to Sony's site to find out if yours is covered. http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=FAQ
