I just picked up my mother-in-laws Sony Handycam DCR-DVD200. I do not see anything when I set the dial to either pictures or video (recording). Note the lens cover is removed. I can view videos previously recorded. Additionally I can record video. However if I record something I can only hear the audio from the recording. The display is still blank (black). Is this camcorder broken or am I doing something wrong?

Had the same.after stopped showing anything and the rest was working perfectly. Changed the flex wire connecting camcorder and it's like new. got from the repair shop and did it by miself. Good luck
I have the same problem with a DCR-HC45.The culprit is the ribbon between the circuit board and the LCD display, but my problem is worse, sometimes the screen turns white and I can't see anything on it.I have no idea from where to buy a replacement ribbon but I know how to replace it.
