Could be an intermittent provider issue, not sure. You could be selecting somebody else's tower that your provider has banned.
I tend to blame phone's antenna or an amplifier (if it has such). I have had exactly same happened to me two weeks ago with AT&T - "no access" on manual mode, unstable, weak, come-and-go connection. What I did was: 1. removed battery and SIM from the phone and kept it this way for maybe four hours 2. put those back in, did NOT turn the phone on. 3. completely charged the battery, i.e. once indicator says "battery is charged" I would unplug and plug back the AC cord - it will begin another incremental re-charge, at I would keep doing it for at least another hour. 4. turned the phone on - strong connection. You wanna try this?
