My monitors green light stays on, but the screen will come on for a second then goes off

any ideals
I've noticed with my FP7317, the problem is not the LCD panel going out, but the backlight. I can just barely make out high contrast shapes on the monitor (such as the "Check Video Cable" box). Using a dual-monitor setup, I can get the FP7317 to light up whenever I change it's refresh rate, but that only lasts for about 5 seconds, and it's dark again. Any ideas on how to get the backlight back on?
If you can't fix it any other way, check outhttp://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/Backl...
Be careful with the thin glass LCD panel! It cracks very easily (now I know)!

Could be a bad invertor board. Is the monitor still under warranty. Compaq can repair it. They'll come to your house. Compaq and HP are now the same company. http://h40059.www4.hp.com/warranty/delivery/levels.php

Saw this happen on a monitor before, opened it up, found cold solder joints (where the component leads were not soldered very well to the circuit board), fired my solder gun up, resoldered every suspicious looking joint and presto! Been working fine for over a year now. :-)

Green light comes on....compaq screen shows.....then goes blank. I can turn it off and on again and the desktop screen will come on but only for a few seconds.
My screen goes off at random and after I cycle it off/on it is back but sometimes for hours or seconds before it starts doing it again. It happened twice as I was typing this. All connections between the monitor and the cpu are good.
