My HP 2200d laser printer has never been serviced. I am able to print, but the pages are coming out "dirty"--the text, photos, etc appear, but there is extra ink on the page--it looks like it could be from print rollers or something.
Could you please tell me how my printer should be cleaned and if there are programs that can be downloaded to assist with maintenance. What physical steps should be taken to clean the interior? Thank you very much for your help!

This shadow, or backgrounding, is generally caused by excess debris remaining on the drum. This is mostly caused by the wiper blade not dislodging all the waste toner. You will need to replace the cartridge (C4096A).
If the toner smears after the page comes out of the printer you may need a new fuser. The fuser is the heating unit in the printer and can usually be seen from opening the back door. Check and see if it has a line worn down the same side as the mark on your pages.
I assume you mean the pages are coming out dirty or gary versus white and black text.
change the drum/cartridge, if you get the same results it could be the hi-voltage power supply. most common is the drum.
Re you using genuine HP NEW cartridges? If not, you must make sure that whoever has re manufactured the ones you are using has replaced the chip on the cartridge. This tells the machine how many copies are on the cartridge.
Does the dirty background get lighter as you print additional pages?
Have you tried a new cartridge yet?
Unless your toner cartridge is leaking toner (you?ll see toner on the inside of the printer or leaking out if you remove the cartridge and shake) a simple cleaning is probably not the answer. Let me know and we'll pick up later.
