I am attempting to take super macro shots, but I don't know a thing about the settings for this except "auto" and super macro. The camera keeps giving me a pink smear down the center of the second photo. I have to turn off the camera and then turn it back on to get another shot, and do the same thing again and again.

From my tests on my *istD, I concluded that the meter is correct but that the ISO sensitivity is overestimated by 0.5. Of course: --this is not necessarily the case with all *istD: many underexpose like mine, some others are correct, some others are worse and need repair --there are always situations which lure any meter, and in which you have to use your own brain, with the help of the histogram (after one test shot). My camera seems to love the low end of the histogram. This is not a problem if the histogram is not clearly cut at the left end: it must show a oblic line at this point, not a vertical. The oblic line is the large majority of cases. However, my practice is now to apply a +0.5 exposure compensation with an eye on the possible burned highlights. For comparison, I had no underexposure problems with my Olympus C2000Z and E10, and my Canon G3. The minoltas A1 and A2 of friends were about 0.5 overexposing. I have no experience of other reflexes.

I guess one of the reasons I'm intent on filters is not only does my A28/2.8 have a very tiny kink in the glass at one edge (it is otherwise brand-new, having been sitting in its box for awhile), I plan to take the camera sailing. Even then, would you be using filters? I guess it's leftover from the days when salesppl scared us all into getting $20 filters to protect three or four figure lenses!

I had the same problem with my cell phone last week. Left the wall wart at home (by accident) . Battery went dead and I plugged in the spare. That battery went dead and I plugged the first one back in. It came up happy and ran all day. Next day I switched again. I figure I got two hard days out of "dead" Lithium Ion batteries.

The built-in memory only has about 8 pictures or so. You have to buy a memory card to insert in the same section where the batteries are inserted.

First make sure the camera is not set to No Flash on the shooting mode dial. Also, in P, Tv, Av or M modes the flash reverts to manual and must be raised manually by pressing the button next to the viewfinder.
When shooting a subject with a strong light source, such as the sun, black lines or other noise may appear on the recorded image. This is called the smear phenomenon and is specific to the CCD of the camera; this is not a camera malfunction. To prevent this from occurring, do not shoot a subject with a strong light source directly.
If the issue persists with all shooting conditions, it may be an issue with the Camera.
Try initializing the Camera. To initialize the Camera, please use the Initialize option under the setup 1 Menu.
If the issue persists, perform a power reset of the Camera.
