I was given a dell inspiron 8500, the problem was i left the adaptor plugged in and the following morning when i booted it up it wont continue to boot up and the power led turns off, battery is no longer charging and when i reattach the power cord the led indicators lights up then tried to boot up again and again it wont continue booting up and when i press the power button i hear some sort or crackling sound like there's something shorting up or loose connection,
I had the very same problem. The way I fixed the problem was only replacing the memory to slot B.
I thought it might work again on slot A after a proper boot up so I placed the memory on slot A again.Gues what, it worked liked a charm.
Is the crackling noise constant?
if so, your hard drive is lockup on the bootup. you have to get a new hard drive.
or you can try to reformat the hard drive, but I don't think that will help.

already had it repaired, it was the memory module slot that caused the booting up not to proceed, a capacitor openned up at the pin #1 of the memory slot b had it replaced from another laptop of the same brand and model. thnaks again
