when i spoke with a TEC rep., she said the problem is due to a cracked ceramic tile, causing the burners to go out. ???

  • Anonymous Jun 23, 2008

My TEC Sterling just developed the same problem. Cannot find anyone who seems to know anything about it, and no one knows how to repair. This is a very expensive grill, hate to think that I am going to have to junk it and buy another grill. I have called TEC and do not get much from them in terms of repair.

I have a TEC Pattio II. I have owned the grill for almost 10 years and TEC grills have a ten year warranty on many of the parts including the burners. The burners on my grill have a ceramic inserts. The pop and loud whooshing noises indicate the ceramic insert or the seal on the burner is "cracked". I have replaced both of the inserts and burners on my grill once about 5 years ago under warranty. I have one burner now that will not stay burning and I contacted TEC today regarding the problem, and I will replace the ceramic insert only under warranty. .

The newest TEC grills like yours have the TEC Radiant Glass Infra-red Cooking System with stainless steel burners with glass surfaces. Confirm with TEC customer service that your grill has has this burner system and not the ceramic one. I assumed this burner system had eliminated the problem of the burners going out with a loud boom.

YOUR ONLY OPTION IS TO CONTACT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE GROUP AT TEC. THE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS 1-800-331-0097. TEC IS LOCATED IN COLUMBIA SC. TEC HAS A USEFUL WEBSITE. I WOULD NOT LET TEC OFF THE HOOK IF YOUR GRILL IS LESS THAN TEN YEARS OLD.

I noticed the skills of the customer service reps are lacking. You may need to talk with the manager. I love my grill and would not have any other brand or type. It is imperative to follow the cleaning instructions in you user manual.

I have an old Tec Searmaster II 1 burner. The burner (screen) got a long crack line and the burner shield got some holes. When I open the grill, I heard a pop noise and some fires are up. Should I change...

Some parts are still available for your discontinued model Tec Grill. The burner less the screen varies in price from $329.00 to $399.00. The Heat Plates start at $153.99. For more information go to

Hope this helps you.

I have a Char-Broil Tec grill everything works fine but after about 2 minutes into grilling, a loud popping sound and the tec-radiant burner goes out, this happens everytime I use the radiant burners

The radient burner most likely has a crack in the top. This will make the pop and the burner will go out. Inspect the top of the burner for any cracks, if you find one, the only solution is to replace the burner. Since these burners get very hot, I do not recommend having the grill lid closed when these burners are being used, this can cause them to overheat and crack the top surface.

Is it harmful to the TEC grill components to throw a match in after turning the left and right gas on ... to ignite it. The ignition and the pilot do not work.

No!
I light mine with a flexible extended lighter. The lighter gives you better control then just tossing a match in. If the ignition and pilot aren't working you probably have a bad flame sensor, or thermocouple, or more than likely you have a spider web or other blockage in the line for the pilot.

Tec Grill Sterling Model won't stay lit

The dealer is right. The ceramic burner is cracked. It will need to be replaced -- pretty pricey. I have the same problem on my Sterling III. This DOES happen too often. My opinion is that this IS a manufacturing defect. I have called the company about it (they are in South Carolina) and they try to blame the user -- that would be us. Very unfortunate company chooses to act this way. You hear about this problem again and again and again -- it's their problem but sadly, they are making it ours. Remember that when you go grill shopping next time -- I know I won't buy a Sterling grill again. Ever.

By the way, I paid $1400 for my TEC grill in 1999, but I believe the new TEC grills are better. I know I would not buy any other brand. One other thought, it is imperative that cleaning instructions are followed.

Tec grill problem

Hello,

If mositure gets into the ceramic burners, then yes it is time for new ones. Was your grill also converted over to accept the new gas? Or another thing it could be that spiders are clogging the burner orifice.. If you contact a local dealer on Tec gas grills or someone that can service gas grills. Might be able to help you.
