Camera switches on then off

When I switch on my Kodak Z740, it starts but closes down almost straight away. The low battery icon is displayed, even though I am using fresh batteries. Camera was purchased about a year and a half ago.

mine is a DX7590 and started turning off as soon as the lens came out. It seems the motor that drives the lens is noisier now than before. It seems like the lens isn't coming completely out and locking maybe. Kodak wants $150 + to fix it. I have tried wiggling the lens as it comes out and made sure the batteries were charged. Also tried it on the dock with the same results. At times, it will work and then it reverts back to turning off as soon as the lens extends. Any info would be appreciated, as I love this camera!

The best solution post from devtpj1 worked for me. My camera would turn on make a grinding noise then turn off. I took off the plastic lens hood and slowly pushed back on the lens casing. It went back a little ways, just like I was using the zoom lens. There was a little snap and then I restarted the camera and it works fine. After some of the other posts I read I thought I was going to have to get a new camera.

A friend of mine had the same problem. If the lens cylinder is not just right this will happen. I took my DX7590 and compared it with the Z7590. A square plastic piece just behind the lens was crooked. I removed the batteries and lightly twisted the lense shaft in the direction needed to straighten this piece. I heard a small snap which put the piece back into square. The camera started working again.

Check the Kodak website Tech support, It does seem that there is a switch fault or internal short here.

Screen and view finder not showing anything

Just covering the bases...
Make sure the lens cap is removed
Turn the ON/OFF switch to Favorite mode
Press EVF/LCD does it toggle
Look to see if the battery level ICON shows better then half
Battery combination sometimes will show a strong icon level
It may be strong in the other modes which draws less power then the picture taking mode.
My guess would be New Battery replacement.
Some tests were done that may be of value to your solution

Fix flash on kodak z740

to try if the flash is working..

*Turn off the camera.
*Install a set of new or fully charged batteries into the camera.
*Turn on the camera.
*Press the Flash Status button to scroll through the flash options until Fill Flash (the lightning bolt icon alone, with no other letter or symbol) is displayed. This forces the camera to use the flash.

If the flash of your camera will not work, refer to www.kodak.com/go/itg for interactive troubleshooting and repair

Digital camera switches on and then off very quickly

I too am experiencing the same problem with this model. Have you found a solution? I think it could be a firmware problem, but I can not find a update download.
