It's possible your volume has been muted. Look down where your clock is, if there's a small speaker icon, click it once. A menu will pop up with the volume controls, and if the "mute" box is checked all you have to do is uncheck it. If the slider is at the bottom of the box, slide it up until you have sound.
If there is no speaker icon, do this: Click Start. Click Control Panel. Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices. This will bring up the sound control, and you need to check the box beside "Place volume icon in the taskbar". Also, there's an option to mute the volume above that; uncheck the box if it's already checked. This will keep the speaker icon down by your clock so you can adjust the volume anytime.
If this doesn't solve your problem, check that your speakers are plugged into the right hole in the back of your PC (not in the microphone jack). There will be little pictures beside each of the jacks so you know which is which. And if your speakers themselves have volume knobs/buttons, make sure they're turned up.
If none of this is helping you, your sound card may have come loose or become defective, so you should have a professional inspect it and possibly replace it. But it's very, very likely that your volume is muted or your speakers are unplugged. You can try using headphones if you think your speakers may be defective!
