I have had th SS550 for almost a year and a half now, and I must confess I have not taken the time to really learn the camera. For my needs, point, click download to pc then I am done.
Recently though, the zoom feature has stopped workng. (for those of you familiar, right where you click to take a picture there is the manual zoom lever and the camera has a built in digital zoom. When i move the manual lever the zoom does not respond? Digital zoom is turned on but does not work neither.
Is there a setting in the camera that turns off the manual zoom as there is for the digital zoom in the menu functions? Or is this repair time? :(
On another note, i can't turn on Date Stamp, the option is greyed out to even hilight the option. Related?
I have tried resetting the camera to default, Have actually read the manual, an Canon's website has been not help.

Re:
Digital Zoom is best ignored in any camera it simply blows up a section of an image already taken, You can do that far better with an image editor in the computer.
As for the Optical Zoom - it does indeed seem to be repair time- As it is only a year and half old- may be Canin will be sympathetic and offer a cheap swap out.

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs.

to make the green square show up just press the shutter button until half (this is called the half press) when the green square shows up then it means that the camera has focused already, if not repeat the process til green square comes out you can press the shutter button fully to take picture when you see the green square...
THis is really a sign of a bad battery that is always being detected fully charge but its really drian , so it will be better for you to replace that battery.....
Your zoom probably does not come out all the way and therefore you get some blurry shots. Had the same problem on a Panasonic camera. Solution: replace zoom motor and gears. Results=expensive. Goes beyond the value of the camera. You might want to buy another used A85 or newer digital camera.
