Sony CDX M730 won't operate manually. Remote operates unit fine.

The unit has been installed for five years. Car radio fuse is okay. Manual operation of the unit stopped functioning the other day. None of the buttons operate manually and the internal display screen does not illuminate. However, the remote for the unit functions fine and all its control buttons operate the unit properly.

I successfully reset the unit and still experience the same problems. I don't believe its the problem, but I'm pulling the unit to check the unit's 10A fuse.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

If it has a fold down face the ribbon cable that sends power to the led facesheild may be broken or just malfunctioning

  • Anonymous Jul 28, 2013

What if it CAN'T be operated with the remote?? Could it still be the flex cable?? I have the CDX-M730 and it doesn't work with the remote. When using the face panel, controlls are messed up. Close button lowers volume, + changes mode, display (?) increases volume. no CD eject. P.S., a Pepsi was spilled into the face. I cleanedcircuit boards, switches, etc. real good. Doyou think it might be the flex cable, or should I just "trash" this radio?? Thanks, Timm ....

Doesn't work!

After all that you have done, it appears that something is wrong with the electronics of unit since a reset would not restore the electronics to proper operation. Try removing ALL power lines( should have 2 of them) and rebooting.

How do you remove sony CDX-S2000 from dashboard?

The directions to remove the Sony CDX-S2000 are in the operating manual, starting on page 15. You need the release keys that came in the original packaging before installation. The installation manual also shows these steps. First remove the front panel by pressing in on the bottom left corner. Then pull the panel towards yourself. This is shown on page 7. Next engage the release keys on sides of the protection collar. (Use the wide end of the keys oriented as shown in the picture). Pull out the keys to remove the protection collar. Reverse the release key and face the hook on each key towards the AM/FM/CD-player. Insert the keys together until you hear a click. Pull the keys out to unseat the unit. Now you can pull the unit out of the bracket.

Sony has the installation manual and the operating manual on the product site: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/mobile-cd-players-cdx-series/cdx-s2000 . The current link to the operating manual is https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/W000/W0002058M.pdf . The link to the installation guide is https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/W000/W0002059M.pdf .

I hope this helps. If you need the keys, I found apparent replacement keys for sale at Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Stereo-Radio-Removal-3-246-471-01/dp/B001DFTTDK .

Can you change the radio stations without the remote?

Yes. This is a link to Sony for your CDX-CA900X operating instructions. Look on pages 13 & 14 for changing radio station w/o remote.

IUnable to set up car radio

I don't see that as a valid model number on the Sony Site, but here is a page that has several CDX radios on the Sony Support Page. You may be able to find it there:

Faceplate will not open

Perhaps something is not installed correctly physically. Sometimes if something is a little twisted the way the unit is installed it will keep it from opening properly. Try moving the unit slightly and see if that helps.
