Dvd rom in ps3 not reading

Yes you need a new laser. The red beam should come on and go off only if its a blu ray disc or ps3 game then the laser will go to a blue beam and from there it should read the ps3 game or blu ray. If a dvd movie is in it the laser should light up red beam and read the dvd.

Take it apart and see if the laser is moving up and down (focusing). If not, then the laser focus servo is bad. After it focuses, the spindle motor should turn and the disc should spin. Remove the spindle lock from the top of the drive case and before it spins quickly place the lock on the disc before it spins to hold the disc in place. If all these processes occur and it still doesn't read, check the lens to see if it's dirty or foggy - clean the lens with "Q" tip and alcohol. if this doesn't work, remove the disk and see if a red beam shines through the lens - if no beam, the laser is bad.

The following types of discs can be played Blue Ray Disc - Playstation No 3 format BD-ROM, BD ROM,BD-R, BD-RE DVD - DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, AVCHD, DSD disc CD - Playstation format CD-ROM,CD-DA (Audio CD), CD-R/RW
Also Check the regional code on the disc which should be compatible with the regional codes which can be played by the PS3

If the PS3 can't read the disks, the laser is the only thing that could cause the trouble. You could've scratched the laser when you cleaned it, or it could have been broken from the start. I recommend calling Sony and calling for a repair. Just hope that they will repair it for free even though you voided the warranty by opening it up.

the laser has gone bad in the dvd drive. You can either replace the laser if you know how to get into the dvd drive or just replace the dvd drive itself. You can find them on Ebay at a decent price.

Hello my friend, try to insert another brand new disk with no scratch to test if its still work. If it is not then try to ship back the device to its supplier or find technician in your place to assist you in order to check if that device is still working. Sometimes the laser eye of the DVD ROM is something to do with that. also try to  clean your DVD ROM if you have disk cleaner.  Hope thisadvice helps you. Just contact me if you need more assistance. That would be the BluRay diode in the laser assembly. There are 2 diodes that emit the light for the laser. One is red which reads everything but BluRay and PS3 games. The purple laser diode reads the BluRay and PS3 discs. You will need to have the laser replaced or call Sony to get a box to send it in for repair or replacement. Thanks!!

First, reset the system. Hold down the power button (blue/green) on the front of the console for about 10 secs, until it beeps. This will reset your system, keeping all previous settings in tact.

If this does not work, be sure to test the drive with a BlueRay movie, listen to the drive when inserting a disk to hear if it spins up initially. If you have a downloaded game or demo, does it work. The more information you can bring to a problem the greater the chance to getting a fix.

Try a laser cleaning disk, you may have debris on the laser head itself.
Also try different disk formats, such as Games-Music-DVD And bluray.
Find out if it,s reading anything At All.

Normally ps1-ps2-ps3 has Red laser beam lens system. So it cannot read Blue ray disks. its not possible until you change it lens system. there are some commericially available Blue laser lens system. Buy one and fix it with authorised service personnel. all the best
