I've tried everything but taking my machine apart! With alot of effort and patience I can get my ps to play music disks and Final Fantasy IV but it skips alot. Anything else freezes. Do I need serious repairs?

some ps2's will have problem reading certain games.... such as blue backs or games that have alot of information on the disc..... try cleaning the laser with a laser cleaning disk... i had to take mine apart and clean the laser before it would play newer games
If your system doesn't recognize blue ray games or blue ray dvds but
still plays normal dvds and music cds your lens is dirty. I had this
problem and my factory and store warranty are up. I decided to take the
machine apart and see what I could do.
If you look online
there are several videos how to take the machine apart. I opened the
machine up, took out the blue ray drive and opened up the drive. Once
you remove the cover from the blue ray drive, take some rubbing alcohol
and a Q-tip and clean the lens. I actually used my t-shirt to wipe it
and blew on the lens and it did the trick. Before you assemble
everything, plug the drive in and pop in a game to see if it works (or
you will have to remove all the screws again.) This should solve your
problem. If your drive doesn't recognize any media, your laser might be
you tear into it and figure out how everything works you'll realize it's
not very complicated. Otherwise you'll end up spending about 150 bucks
for Sony to do the same thing.
Your laser either needs to be cleaned or is going bad. I have seen this many times before. Try taking the drive apart and cleaning the laser aperture with 91% alcohol and a cotton swab (carefully). If that doesn't work then you need to replace the laser (or get a new drive).
The 'Eye' that the PS uses to read DVDs/CDs are different, the one that reads cds has gone bad on yours it seems, so you should still be able to play the games that have the dvd logo, if it is still under warranty I reccommend calling sony.
I'm also having this problem as well, it has to do with the OS and it is corrupted. It seems like the "Game mode" has been corrupted preventing us from playing games on the hard drive or reading games.
