I bought the Sony SCD XE-680 second - hand a few days ago and connected it to my Kenwood Audio Visual Sound Receiver KRF - V505D using the DVD/6Ch setting.I connected it via 5 phono leads ( I do not have a subwoofer, but have the front L, R , the Centre, and the back L and R speakers set up and already working with my DVD Dolby -Digital and DTS Player.
The trouble is I set the SACD up to test the speakers , they all hiss accordingly including the Centre, and then when I play the SACDs i have , the Centre channel is utterly silent and various bits of the music are missing.I think I have tried every combination of buttons to get it to work , but have hit a brick wall.
Help would be gratefully appreciated!
Thanks for linking me to some help pages, but I have already tried all what was listed, about multichannel, etc, both on the Amp and on the Sony SACD player.
It seems the brick wall will never break down.

The receiver's out put sections are grouped in pairs. Front left and right in one output, rear left and right in second output, and center channel and sub output on the third. Sounds like a semiconductor or semiconductors have gone bad in the center & sub output.

Maybe the surround processor is having a bad day... My kenwood would do similar and a reset was necessary to correct. Have you tried resetting the system? On my Sony STR DE 597 this is accomplished by powering off. Then while holding the 2 channel button down (front face plate) power on. A reset message is displayed. Your model may be similar but check your manual or download the PDF of the manual from Sony's support website. Hope this helps
make sure sub is working .Power it up , remove sub RCA jacks from receiver .Gently tap on RCA with fingers. You should here a hum when touched .You can also try audio from TAPE REC OUT .If you dont get audio .Check setting at sub .If it working okay check setting at receiver and or sub level at receiver
