Hi , i have a philips 8xdvd-rw re-writer , i have installed it , and have windows media, i have window xp , but the dvd,s wont run , i have been told that i need a decoder , but as im not pc tech minded , i dont know where to go from here, can i download a decoder , can anyone help please , thanks cheryl

Well, when you insert a disc and go to My Computer then to the DVD drive itself, does it show that a disc is in the drive, if it does does and you open the drive does it show the contents of the drive! If so then you are having a software issue regarding the decoder!

If when you go to My computer an the disc does not come up in the drive or the drive doesn't show or anything like that you may be having problems witht the drive / configuration itself

What software do u use to write DVDs on both PCs...
if they are different then that may be the issue....
dont spoil the DVDs....
try DVD RW disks...that way you can erase them later...
i too have the same DVD writer, not had any issue in either XP or Win7....i have dual boot and have made many movie DVDs using both OS...i use Nero and Power2Go of LG(the install disk that came with the LG DVD writer has this great software...."LG Power tool")
try this tool...it should work...
the inbuilt DVD creator in Win7 has some issues with DVD creation....due to non compatibility of graphics card and display drivers (WDDM)....+ you may not have the correct codec required to burn DVDs.....
get the FFDSHOW codec from google.... and install it...shutdown and restart and then try...

Is the drive you are using a DVD writer or only a DVD reader? The drive that writes to RW disks is labeled DVD/RW or DVD Recordable. These are the only drive types that will read and write a DVD/RW disc.
I recently installed a dvd writer for my neighbor. they used a top brand dvd-r / rw and never had any problem. but after the new install they had the same problem . after visiting the manufacturer's website we found that that certain brand of dvd were recommended. check the manufacturers site for dvd recommendations.
i have 2dvd dvd writer but i want install roxio thas edition say that is compatible whit xp but my computer say isnot compatible i eraser this instalation and now dont work my dvd writer
please try to restart your computer while the dvd is still in the drive. this usually happens if your drive may have some accumulated dust for it will select only a few dvd to read.
