I've seen issues like this with a bad hard drive. When entering the bios it queries the hard drive first and it's got issues it can hang it up like this. If you have a spare try that. You can try to boot it without a hard drive to see if it gets past this. Some computers won't boot without a hd though. If you've got another computer you can look around online to make a flash drive bootable and use that instead of your hard drive. Lastly, get a new hd.

In order to boot from a USB I have to enter Bios and change the boot to USB, but I cannot enter the bios, correct?

  • Anonymous Oct 22, 2012

Well sometimes it's already configured to boot to usb but since you don't usually have bootable usb connected it bypasses it. I'd probably try to disconnect the hd first since it's the easiest.

I removed the HDD and started it up, I got to the BIOS setup! Than I restarted it tried to put the HDD in again and it didn't work, so I removed the HDD again and started it, and it DOESNT work, any idea why?

  • Anonymous Oct 25, 2012

Yes. The HDD is bad. You need to replace it. Most likely it's a 2.5" SATA drive. I recommend getting a 7200 rpm drive at least. You won't be able to get the data off in its state. If it's important enough you can contact a data recovery service and send it off but they are really expensive.

I put a HDD from another laptop in and when I start it up and press F2 it says entering setup and just stays there an does nothing, shouldn't it at least go to the bios if it was the HDD?

  • Anonymous Oct 25, 2012

Ok, then it doesn't seem like it's the hard drive. Did you disconnect any usb devices connected to it and try it?

  • Anonymous Oct 26, 2012

Nope nothing but the power cable, even tried with just battery, could this be a short? What can cause this

  • Anonymous Oct 27, 2012

I suppose it could be bad ram but it's pretty early in the boot process for that. It sounds like you've got another laptop around so I would try that next. It's starting to sound like bad mb though.

Is the PC actually doing to sleep or is the display just amber with the fan and power light on the PC still running?

Do you have multiple video cards or multiple ports?
You may have the monitor plugged into the non-default port on your video card or the wrong card. Try plugging the monitor into another port as the PC should use all outputs when booting but then define a default display once the driver is loaded. Also take a look at the default video display in your BIOS settings. Depending on what your setup is you should be able to choose between (onboard, PCI, AGP)

SOURCE: HP Pavillion freezes up on the HP Invent splash screen

Don't throw out that computer or replace any components just yet.

After much trial-and-error, I finally figured out the solution for this common issue with certain HP Pavillion models. It turns out to be a design flaw with the front-panel memory card reader. Somehow the card reader's firmware gets scrambled, and it prevents the computer from booting. You can test this on your machine by temporarily disconnecting the card reader cable at the motherboard header. Voila - I'll bet you $1 that your computer will now boot!

The solution is buried deep inside this HP tech support document. The card reader firmware needs to be reset.

Here\'s how to fix it once and for all:

1) With the computer power unplugged (duh), open up the case & disconnect the card reader cable at the card reader itself - NOT the end that connects to the motherboard header. Make sure the cable end is not touching any metal components before proceeding to step 2 (another duh).

2) With the cable still disconnected, fire up the computer. The tech support doc says to let it boot into Windows and stay there for about 5 minutes.

3) Shut the computer down and reconnect the cable to the card reader.

4) Turn your computer back on - your memory card reader will work and, most importantly, the computer will no longer hang at POST!

I suspect that when you fire up the computer without the cable connected, the card reader is designed to reset its firmware by grounding out through the case - sort of like a CMOS Reset jumper on a motherboard.

I hope this solution is helpful to others.

best,
JohnB

How can i boot my dell studio from cdrom so i can reinsall from external drive?

Turn on the machine, press F12 once the Dell splash screen is displayed, the boot menu will show up. From the Boot Menu, use up-down arrow keys on the keyboard and highlight the CD/DVD/CD-RW and press Enter. You will see another menu, select "Boot from Cd-Rom" and press enter to select it. The system will boot up from the CD-Rom. Please note that this settings is only for one time boot, once the system is restarted, the boot sequence will be restored to the previous saved settings. If you wish to set it from the Bios, enter the Bios settings by hitting F2 or Delete (should be shown at the bottom of the Dell splash screen) while you see the Dell Splash Screen. In the Bios settings menu, go to Boot options and make the changes with the boot sequence.

Acer 3000 Series Laptop Splash screen does not appear at startup when pressing F2 on the post page. Therefore unable to acces bios. Has e-manager but cannot access bios through it either. Welcome all...

It sounds like the Acer logo has been turned off in the bios settings. As soon as you hit the power button, start tapping the F2 key until you see the test appear "entering setup". Once you are in the BIOS, look for the Logo settings as far as being visible during Boot up. I've seen this setting on other systems so I am thinking the Acer should be similiar.

Laptop won't boot. No splash screen. Crash

Take out any USB device from the PC when rebooting: some BIOSes will incorrectly try to boot off them.

If that doesn't work, enter the BIOS Setup (F2 or Del key at boot) and find the Boot Devices menu, confirm that the highest-priority one is "Internal HDD" (or the name of your internal hard disk).

On boot up screen reads "Loading PBR 2...done"

As the notebook is starting you see the Dell 'Splash' screen. Press F2 to go into the BIOS setup. Check to make sure two things: first that your cd/dvd and hard drive are being recognized and identified, second that your boot order has the cd/dvd first and internal hard drive second. Your machine may be trying to do a USB device boot or network boot when these options are not available. Next try pressing F8 immediately after the splash screen disappears to try to get into Safe Mode. If it still fails to boot, I would try booting using a Windows XP installation disk and then going into the repair console to check if the hard drive is damaged or corrupted.
