the lens is probably damaged, if this was brought second hand its probably why. the lens sometimes when damaged works for a few mins and then stops working, give it time it may start working again for a little while, but you will ultimatly have the same problem. the best solution is to replace the lens unit Entirely.
If your PS2 works fine with most
of the games and won’t play a few..Then you should try this trick to play them
too on your PS2:
Turn on your PS2 without
inserting any disc.
Menu screen will
Press the (triangle) Button to enter Version
Information Menu that looks like
Highlight the Play Station
Driver as above and again press (triangle).
New screen will appear like
Highlight the Disc Speed
as above and press X button,to enter Disc Speed Menu
And set it from Standard to
After you set Disc Speed to Fast,Press and HoldReset Button to turn off your console.
Then again Press and Hold Reset
Button till the Blue Light turns on.
Remove the Reset Button and
Press it again.
patient and wait till thegame loads itself. If your lens is in good condition then
it will play game in first go else try again till it PLAY your game. If still
your Grand Turismo 4 DVD wont work then you must clean your PS2 lens.Watch following video to learn about cleaning lens: Thank you and Good Luck!
This is the error code for disk errors: "An error occurred during the start operation. (8001002B)". If the disc is clean, maybe the laser is dirty. Use a lens cleaning CD to give the laser a clean (cheap to buy). You can also try deleting the temporary game data (using Game Data Utility) and reinstall the game.
Blocking the sensors did you in I'm afraid. What has happened is the *DVD* read mechanism has gotten goofed because of this, but the *CD* read mechanism is still ok. Maximo and a few other PS2 games were actually on CD, not DVD. If you look on the back cover, you will see the Compact Disc logo (in the lower right area on the box for Maximo). These games have a blue bottom disc instead of the silver bottom.
You can attempt to re-align the laser which is a fairly lengthy process and there are numerous guides out there to do this. Here is one: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
Note that this guide is for the larger model but the concept of lens adjustment is still the same and a quick google search will provide more in-depth detail. Since you have already opened your system, this may be an option for you. If the PS2 was purchased new as you said, it might not be the worst idea to exchange it for a new model as the lens going out this soon might be an indication that the unit wouldn't have lasted that long to begin with.
Also just a friendly reminder that opening your PS2 voids your warranty and double check the return policies of where you bought the system.
