My wife had this problem with iPhone 4S after updating to ios6 on a Sony xdr-ds12ip docking station. Sound would play on iPhone off the docking station, but once it was docked no sound would come through the docking station speakers (docking station radio works fine, as did the iPhone before the iOS update).
Fixed it by powering down both the iPhone and the docking station at the mains, gave it 2-3 minutes and then powered on the docking station and then the phone. Placed the iPhone in the docking station and voila the sound comes out of the speakers now.
Call Altec Lansing..They will replace the Base for free. It seems this is a problem they are aware of and are offering a replacement. Just got my replaced.
There is some docking stations or players for the generic MP3 players but most don't even need them. A lot of them do have speakers attached but you can always get generic stations such as the one that IPOD offers or if you want to save some cash, just get some speakers that will attach to the player. There is a lot of products out there so shop around and even check out your major retailers such as Wal Mart
The problem is that Atlec Lansing used a low quality (piece of ****) plug/interface for the dock. If you pull the top of the ipod forward while it is pressed fully onto the docking station, you'll get a surprise. It will work. This problem stumped me for days. Now, the next question is how much tension is the proper amount not to degrade the cheap plug further or damage the ipod itself.
Two problems:
1) Your Sansa (and just about any other mp3 player) will not play while it is connected to the computer - it is only supposed to play once it is disconnected from the computer
2) Your docking station might be for brand-name iPod's only - using an incompatible docking station is one possible way to ruin your player
Get a simpler external speaker system with an audio jack that runs from the headphone jack of Sansa to the input jack of the docking station.
They both use the same speakers, my personal opinion deems they are both the same. However the second SoundDock charges via USB pin, so it is future proof for future iPods.
I own the im600 and I have managed to take it apart far enough to fix it. I saw no screws to open the system, but I saw that the grille was loose, so carefully I took it off using a tweezer with a sharp point (sticking it in the holes is the grille near the edge, using the tweezer as a lever) after some time the grille was off. After that I could take the speakers out etc. Maybe this could help you.Only thing is that I haven't figured out yet how to open the whole system and exposing the circuitry etc, it stays stuck at the display somehow (if you figure it out, please tell me )
docking station won't pair with speakers
