A couple of days ago, my Whirlpool Duet washer (GHW9100LQ1) started making a loud banging while spinning as though the load was out of balance. In addition I have found a white residue on clothes that were washed in a dotted pattern matching up with the holes inside the tub. And on top of that there is a gasket at the front of the tub (not the boot) that seems to be disintegrating, leaving fragments in the washed clothes. I have also found a fine gravelly discharge in the outflow and similar material was in the pump filter when I cleaned that out.
Most likely not the drum bearing on this one.
I believe that your inner basket support has failed. It's a common problem on 4+ year old duet washers. This is by far the most labor intensive repair that can be done on the duet washer. You will need to tear down the machine for this repair. Expect it to be a four to eight hour job depending on your level of skill.
The basket is under lifetime warranty. The new basket will come w/the basket support already attached to it. Stupid as it sounds, You can't buy the bolt-on basket support alone, You need the entire basket! wtf?
The front section of the outer tub is supposed to have a 10yr warranty. Being that the tub was damaged by the basket, They may or may not warranty the parts.
Do a search on fixya. There is a guy from MA that has a complete set of pictures and info on the rotted/broken basket support.
The banging is usually due to a bad drum bearing, this also cause drum spinning in an irregular waw, and can be the cause for the gasket problem and the clothes not washing.
Replacing the bearing is not an easy repair and should be done by a technician.

For what it is worth, a Whirlpool-recommended technician confirmed this diagnosis. Whirlpool was willing to waive the shipping charges for the parts.
I should have added this comment a while ago. When the technicians who did the work tore down my machine, it revealed that if was indeed the tub support rather than the bearing that had failed. The repair was done for the cost of labor as the parts were under warranty. There was some talk of my being charged for shipping the parts (inner and outer drum), but Whirpool eventually waived those fees. I'm just as happy that I had someone else do the work. It ended up being a 2-person job, but they were able to complete the work in under 2 hours. They appreciated that I had cleared them a large work area in our laundry room as the whole machine really does have to come apart.
