My washing machine keeps getting stuck in the wash cycle. it will wash forever unless the cancel button is pushed. it will rinse and spin fine it just you have to then mannualy select the rinse /spin cycle and press the start button. oh its a hotpoint front loader.
its reasonably new i.e it dosent have a mecanical/ clockwork program selector.
any advice greatly appriciated.

Check if heating by putting on as hot wash and feeling the door. if no heat, check continuity thro the heater - modern heaters have a non-resettable cut-out in them which can cause problems.
no heat then no program advance

Control board needs to be replaced. Many times the control boards go bad because of a spike in the electrical grid cause by a brown out, lightening strike or even a surge in the power. After the control board is replaced... I suggest using a surge protector on all of your electronic devices including the washing machine.
spot on fixed the prob. this guy knows his stuff
rinse hold on but cannot cancel it so washing not spinning
start light keeps blinking wash rinse final spin and control button stay on
