Timer runs continuously - Does not stop at all

A problem started a couple days ago with our Maytag MDE400AYW electric dryer.  The timer does not stop running even when it reaches stop on the dial (it just goes right past stop).

The dryer seems to be drying just fine, but does not stop unless the door is opened.  If the door is then closed again, the dryer doesn't run until the start button is pressed again.

Doed this sound like it's just a timer replacement job?  What actually stops the timer from turning when it reaches stop?  Is it internal to the timer, or is it external to the timer on a circuit board?

The timer appears to be Maytag part number 3301730 from what I can determine online.

Yes, I understand that a motor runs the timer. What stops that motor at when the timer reaches stop? Is it internal to the timer, or is it external (on a circuit board elsewhere in the dryer)?

There should be a timer motor on the timer. That is most likely burnt out and will cause the timer to not shut down. Just replace the timer and that will solve the problem

Maytag dryer model MDE6657BYW timer will not advance in Perm Press or Regular cycles but will in the Time Dry cycle. Replaced timer, worked for a couple of days, now new timer does the same thing.

It’s most likely caused by your Cycling Thermostat AP6007567. When this thermostat opens due to heat in the blower housing, the timer starts running. I believe this thermostat is bypassed in the Timed Dry mode. The thermostat is on the blower housing so you would have take the front off the dryer to access it.

Dryer runs 20 mins, stops, must be restarted over and over. run time becomes less and less after each restart.

check thermal switch on back of dryer, join wires together(tape with electrictape so i tdoes not touch body)then turn on,if runs properly there you go.or change timer

Maytag MED5700TQ occasionally completely shuts down during cool down mode

Sure!
You may have a bad timer, that is turning off the electricity to the motor while the heater is still energized.

Long time ago, dryers had about 3 "automatic shut-off's" two on the heating element, and one on the motor.
Because of the lint that comes with drying clothes, fire is always a danger.
Today, the "thermostat shut-off's" are up to 5, 6, or 7 on some models!
Sounds like your dryer is getting hot enough to trip one of these. When the whole machine cools down, the thermostat resets, and the machine starts again.'
I had a dryer do the same thing. The problem with that one was nothing more than dust and lint in the motor, and all I had to do was vacuum out or blow out the motor about once or twice a year.
Be blessed

I have a maytag dryer and when you start it the timer doesn't move - it will run for hours unless you stop it. now when you pull the knob to start it doesn't respond

Sounds like the problem is in your timer contacts, in which case you would have to replace your timer. A no heat scenario on auto dry could also cause a dryer to run continuously.

Hope this helps _MJ_

The Dryer stopped and will not start again

Just had a similar problem with our Maytag Electric Dryer. The dryer shut off mid-cycle and wouldn't start again, but the timer kept running. We purchased a "Thermal fuse replacement kit" at a local appliance parts store for $38 and replaced the fuse ourselves. The dryer is running great! Here's a couple of website links that were helpful in figuring out out how to replace the fuse: http://www.partselect.com/repair.aspx?appliance=dryer&part=replace-thermal-fuse

Hope this helps!

Maytag dryer PYE3300AYW Continuously runs

jefo, it sounds to me like your timer is not advancing. Does it move at all or stay in place? In what you are saying it will stop when you turn it to off, I would think it could be the timer that is the problem. Part # 53-1810.
