I have a Dell inspiron 1318, it turns itself off after 5 mins the really weird thing is that it looses power so does the charger. I have purchased a new charger and that does the exactly same thing. When it turns off it power off like a power cut or something and then gives me the F8 options. The only way to turn it on again is leave the laptop and charger unplugged from mains for day (till the current the capacitor dies out) and then try again. I have tried it without a battery but no luck. Hope some can help. Thanks in advance.

Norm.. Suffice to say these are a problem. Is it a P35 Adapter? If so look for a replacement and retry. If this does not help Check the CMOS battery voltage as crazy as it may seem but the Dell adapters are a little more complicated than a standard 2 wire output adapter. They have a 19V Feeder or main supply, The Negative or Ground as some people/techs call it as well as a 3.3V data circuit thats related to the Embedded controller chipset, BIOS and other circuits on the board. Also see if you can find a friend local with a known good working battery/adapter if you cannot afford or dont want to spend money on it. If all else fails yell back weve repaired a ton of these and they should have been included in the 5150/5160 Dell Class settlement in my opinion as they have a ton of similar components/issues..
Good Luck! Ken

The motherboard is bad. This model had a fault where after a while the North Bidge heatsink would break off and short the motherboard distroying it. This problem is something to not fix, it is not worth it, cost more than it is worth.

sounds like your charging circuit isn't working or the adapter isn't putting out enough power or amprage to fully charge the battery, or you battery went bad. if the charging circuit is bad then so is *********** board, time to burry the system and buy a new one

i had the same problem... there can be a few reasons why... the adapter i had was at first able to charge the battery... for some reason it stopped charging the battery but was still able to keep the power on... i had a friend who also had a dell laptop and for some reason his adapter was able to charge my battery so it wasnt the battery... i called dell and they sent me another adapter and that was able to charge it...

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and it won't power up. I do not know what the power jack is. There is a green light on the power box. Nor do I know what board you are referring to. Please advise. Thanks!

Are you plugging it into a surge protector? If you are, have you tried to plug it in to a different one or directly to the wall? To me this sounds like it is either a problem at the power source or a short circuit in the laptop power connector (since it keeps happening even with a different charger).
