Memory on my mp3 is almost full without any songs on it.

Try this: Connect your MP3 player to your computer. Open "My Computer". You should see your MP3 player connected. Right click on it. Click on FORMAT. This should completely wipe everything on your MP3 player (except for the original necessary files that came on it origianlly). You should then be able to get all of your space back.

My MP3 player lost storage

Does this player use a removable card or internal storage? If it's removable, then you should be able to use a card reader and reformat it (slow format) to regain your original space. If it's internal, I would suggest getting a trial version of software such as Disk Space Recovery Wizard 6.5 to regain your real estate. Worst case scenario, you have a hacked player and the 4GB you thought you had never existed.

44 songs sounds about right for a 512Mb with high bitrates.

Formating

Go to SanDisk and download the latest firmware update. You shouldn't have to format anything for it to work.
