Charging the Magellan 1412 with a pc

My Magellan 1412 unit will not charge with a standard usb to mini-usb cord connected directly to my pc. I'm not plugging into a hub either. It charges fine fine with the car charger. What can I try to get my pc to charge it?

try a wall mount 5V usb charger, like you would get for a RAZR.

Hello,
I was looking for a USB cable to use to update the firmware and did not see any particular specifications for the usb cable. I decided to
use the USB cable that I purchased for my motorola v3 along with the phone tools software. When I plugged it in the 1412 sat on a screen waiting for the PC application for updating maps or software which I had not installed yet. I found that the 1412 was actually taking a charge from the motorola phone tools kit. ALSO with a few repeated attempts on my XP PC I was able to access the files on the 1412 from 2 drives that it set up on my PC just like a USB stick. One drive was a virtual CD drive and the other was just like a
usb flash drive. So I backed up the software to my PC. I have not done any hacking yet but I bet there are some ways to do this.

Gps 1412 will not charge

Have you check the voltage output on your power/charger cord? It's easy to test if you know how to use a multi-tester or take it to a small electronics shop like a Radio Shack.

If there is no voltage output from the charger, then simply replace the cord. I have found that those charging cords can break real easily but it's hard to physically see any damage.

Otherwise, if you've already tried a new charger, you may need to send your GPS in for service.

Problem charging MAGELLAN GPS.

I found there are select 120v AC adapters that will work on Magellan GPS. When a working 120v or 12v adapter to mini USB adapter is plugged into the unit, the battery bars will be 'scrolling' and therefore charging.

When your adapter, or even USB cable from your computer, is plugged into the GPS unit, and the battery goes to FULL, it is NOT CHARGING. The battery bars must be SCROLLING for the unit to charge. In this case, get a different adapter until it works.

This was tested on a Magellan 1412, and may apply to other Magellan GPS.

My gps doesnt work without the charger???!!!!

If its not charging the battery with the 12 volt cigarette cord, the meter will say full even though the battery is dead. This is a common problem with GPS Units with the USB as a charging port. If the GPS Unit is still under warranty, i would send it back to magellan or whereever you bought it, the sooner the better. I believe that you GPS is defective or in need of repair. Hope this helps.

GPS doesnt turn on with power cord adaptor or 12v lighter socket

if you can verify that the car charger is ok, try plugging it in to your computer using the usb cable. the 1412 should charge with the usb cable. if it still doesnt turn on, try and reset the unit, little pin hole on the side.

How do I charge my Magellan 1412 with my pc?

http://www.magellangps.com/assets/manuals/roadmate_1412_manual_en.pdf

i read your manual , and it doesn't specifically state it will charge thru the usb cable , but most do , usp port on pc having 5 volts , is handy , they may or not have given your unit that option , i all can say is leave it plugged into the usb when it is dead or low and test it sometime . don't kill the messenger :)

WE CHARGE THE MAGELLAN GPS AND TURN IT OFF. BUT WHEN WE GO TO USE IT AGAIN IT IS DEAD. I ONLY HAVE THE LIGHTER OUTLET TO HOOK UP FOR POWER SO WHEN I NEED TO PROGRAM IT IN THE HOUSE I DO NOT HAVE A WAY TO...

Hello kdiltzbook,

Most GPS units can be charged three different ways:

1. Connection to a computer via USB port
2. Connection to a automobile via cigarette lighter plug
3. Connection to a wall outlet via an AC adapter

Typically most GPS devices these days include only the USB cord. Some GPS units also include the cigarette lighter plug. For most GPS units the cigarette lighter plug and AC adapter are optional accessories have to be purchased in addition to the GPS.

You don't mention which model of Magellan GPS you have so I am not sure which cords your GPS should have included. It sounds like you have the cigarette lighter cord and the USB cord? I am sure that Magellan has an AC adapter available for your GPS. You will want to contact them directly (their website is http://www.magellangps.com) or visit an electronics store that sells Magellan GPS receivers (such as Best Buy™) to purchase the adapter.

However, most GPS receivers can be charged from the USB programming cord on the computer. However, ensure you are plugging the cord directly into a USB 2.0 on the computer itself NOT a port on a USB hub. (A USB hub may not output enough power to actually power and charge the GPS.)

You will also want to check and replace the fuse on the automobile plug.

I believe that both the USB and automobile cords should be charging the GPS. If neither adapter is charging the unit then the problem may be the GPS unit itself. The GPS may have a bad battery or problem with its charge circuitry. If that’s the case the unit may require factory service as the battery pack is generally not considered to be end user replaceable.

Best Regards,
Ken
