Gentleman, When I press the power button on my camera (Canon PowerShot S500)I get an error message which says: Memory card error. Is this camera faulty or this is a setting problem. Please help me because the camera doesn't take photos any more. Kmawon
If the message "Card Locked" comes up, it means that the memory card's write/protect tab is set to "Write Protect". Simply slide the tab upwards to fix.

I had the same problem on my IXUS 500. I bought a new card because my first thought was that the card was faulty, but that didn't solve the problem. I tried to clean the CF card slot but that didn't help. My last resort was to open up the camera and try to find the culprit. I blew away all the dust which has accumulated over time and touched as many parts as possible to fix any defective contacts. After reassembling everything it worked again, funny.

Either the camera or the card is faulty. There is not a setting which will cause this problem. Try a different memory card, if the problem persists you will need to get the camera repaired.

I have the same problem. the card is not locked the camera just thinks it is. Other cards work fine, the card is just busted (it won't work on the computer reader either).
Other cards (the one that came with the camera) still work.
