Tripping GFI Coffee spilled in the bottom of the microwave and tripped the GFI. I took the unit apart and cleaned up the mess. The system will run on a direct circuit and I get the clock on the microwave. After about 1 minute of just the clock, the GFI circuit trips again. Haven't even tried to power it up on the GFI circuit...clearly there is a problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated before the kids get home! Thanks

Proceed using the common sense. You must open the microwaves for to see what happen, the coffee produce bad contacts, and reaction from component like short, etc. However the following. God bless you
Door Switch If the microwave runs for a few seconds and then shuts off, a door switch might have failed intermittently. Check each of the door switches for any signs of overheating, arcing, or burning. Also check each of them for continuity. Replace any of the switches that is visibly damaged or that only has continuity intermittently.

Main Control Board If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops there may be a short circuit in the main control board. Check other components first, these boards are often misdiagnosed.
Touchpad and Control Panel If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad and control panel might be defective. There are several other components that can cause this problem, be sure to check any other components before replacing this board.

Touchpad If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad might be at fault. This is not common. Generally speaking, if the dishwasher display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.

High Voltage Transformer If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the high voltage transformer might have an intermittent short. This is not common. Check other components related to the microwave symptom first.

Thermoprotector If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the thermoprotector may have tripped. This is a safety device to prevent the microwave from overheating. It can be tested for continuity to see if it's blown.

Thermostat If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the thermostat might be defective. Watch our video on testing thermostats.

SOURCE: Accidentally ran my KHMS155LSS-1 KitchenAid

Hi,

If the unit quit working while cooking then your not in a good situation. There are 3 fuses/cut off thermostats inside the unit that if they break when in use--means something else caused them to break and you have another problem.

You will have to pull the unit completely down and then take off the outer case of the unit to look inside. The most common fuse that breaks is located just behind the control panel and it's a 1" long ceramic cylinder fuse. If it has no continuity then get another and see what happens when you start the cycle.

I should warn you that microwaves are the one appliance not recommended for do-it-yourselfers because they store a charge in the capacitor and if not handled correctly and you touch the wrong wire it can actually KILL you.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

SOURCE: My KHMS155LSS microwave worked fine

If the key pad not working, then there can be many causesfor this behavior (or lack of behavior): 1. Door is notclosed - on many ovens; there will be no response to any buttons - even settingthe clock - unless the door is securely closed. 2. You waited toolong - some models (like Sharp) have a timeout. If you close the door but don'tproceed to activate any functions with a couple of minutes, they will requireyou to open and close the door to reset their pathetic brains. 3. Controller isconfused - a power surge or random non-reproducible action of the universe mayhave resulted in the controller's program ending up in an infinite loop. Pullthe plug for a minute or two to reset it. 4. Defectiveinterlock switches - this can result in the controller thinking the door isopen and ignoring you. 5. Faulty controlleror its power supply - a power surge may have damaged the electronics. Otherthan checking for bad connections and obviously bad power supply components, diagnosing this will be tough without a schematic (and possibly much more). 6. Touch pad orcontroller board contaminated by overenthusiastic cleaning - if you recentlypower washed the oven (or even if you only use some spray cleaner), some mayhave gotten inside and shorted out the touch pad or controller. 7. Defective ordamage touch pad - physical abuse is not a recommended technique for getting amicrowave oven to cooperate. If there is any visible damage to the touch pad -the outer film is broken - it will probably need to be replaced. Also Spillsare a common cause of keypad problems, so if the keypad is not working it isimportant to check for residue that could indicate a spill. If a spill issuspected, simply cleaning the keypad thoroughly and allowing it to dry may fixteh problem. It may take a couple of days for the keypad to dry thoroughlyafter a spill has been cleaned up, so it is important to be patient. If display is totally dead: 1. Ifall functions work normally including heating but the display is blank(assuming you can issue them without being able to see the display), theproblem is almost certainly in the controller or its power supply. 2. Trypulling the plug for a minute or two - for some reason the display portion ofthe controller may have been sent out to lunch by a power surge or alphaparticle. It wouldn't be the first time. 3. Checkfor bad connections between the display panel and the power supply and solderjoints on the controller board. 4. With everything else operational, a bad micro controller chip is not that likely but is still a possibility. If the ovenwas physically abused, the display panel may have fractured though it wouldtake quite a bit of violence. In this case, more serious damage to the doorseals may have resulted as well which would be a definite hazard. To check the main fuse: 1. Unplug the oven and locate and remove the main fuse. Itwill usually be a 1" x 1-1/4" ABC ceramic type directly in-line withthe Hot (black wire) of the power cords. 2. If it is blown, suspect problems with the interlockswitches, high voltage capacitor, or high voltage wiring. 3. If it is good but the oven makes a loud humming soundwhen you attempt to cook, suspect the magnetron or high voltage diode. Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

Started tripping the GFI outlet. Outley appears to functioning correctly after re-set, but the microwave keeps tripping it when I plug it back in

HI Joe
Couple of things to consider here.
  1. There may be a GFI plug there at the microwave, but it can get tripped by current leakage on other parts of the circuit. If there are other things plugged into the circuit (every outlet that's on the same panel breaker), it's possible any of them could be causing the tripping. Unplug anything else on the circuit, then plug things back in one by one to see if there's something that may make it pop.
  2. The reset switch in a GFI plug is mechanical. If it's been tripped a few times, it may be worn or not fully reset. Electrical guides usually suggest testing / resetting GFI plugs monthly, both to make sure they work, and also to cycle the mechanical switch. If dust, toaster crumbs, or other stuff might have gotten into the mechanism, it might not be mechanically resetting properly. Try test/reset/test/reset a few times and see if any of the clicks start feeling more distinct.
  3. The trip can be legit. Hopefully not the microwave, but if there is a short in the line somewhere, you really want to track it down before it causes a fire. In some cases, even heavy dust on/in outlets can cause pseudo-shorts with some current trickling to ground. GFI switches will usually trigger with less than 5 mA of current drop, so it doesn't take much. Blow out the receptacle with canned air.
The switch or it's connections may be bad. Unplug the microwave and (no cutting corners here), turn off the breaker to the plug. Undo the faceplate and mounting screws and pull the plug away from the wall. Check that the wire connections to the plug are tight, and that the wire nuts connecting the plug to the wall lines are also firm and tight. Tighten if necessary. If you're still getting trouble after trying this all, Consider replacing the outlet and seeing if that helps.

Hoping this helps!

How to clean liquid under round grate oven base?

Avantiums are heavy. Underneath the turn table mechanically is only the turn table motor and the frame of the microwave. I would let it sit for a day and dry out before using it. But in the long run it might create corrosion and eventually you will need to replace your turn table motor. But I have seen liquid spilled into the turn table motor and be fine. You may create more damage by uninstalling your microwave to clean up the spill.

Coffee spilled microwave while heating now microwave is dead it is a general spacemaker what can I do

Wow, generally a spill in a microwave shouldn't be catastrophic, but if it blew the wall plug, something bad happened. What do you mean it blew the plug? Did it simply trip a GFI? a breaker? Either way something must be amiss inside. Best case is a blown fuse in the microwave. You can look inside for evidence of a short but follow all safety practices and ensure the unit is depowered and steer clear of the big capacitor as it could still be charged.

We have a kenmore microwave oven & keeps tripping our breaker switch. Its not even a year old. What is the problem?

Your microwave should be on a 20 amp dedicated circuit. Often people add these later after initial construction and do not have an isolated circuit for it. If you have this on a circuit with other outlets or possibly the refrigerator, this can cause the circuit overload and trip your breaker. Try running an extension cord from another circuit that is not being used such as outlets, but not GFI outlets! and see if your microwave operates then. If not you have an internal issue with the microwave and it could be a defective Magnetron or doorswitch assy causing the problem.

Microwave Circuit trips First: It began after some watery contents spilled out while microwaving from being turned on for a very long time (the most ever) overheating. It spilled over and some seeped out...

The outlet with the red button is a GFI (ground fault interrupter) type. It may have been damaged when the microwave overheated. If so, it may trip when loaded.

You should do a full two minute heat test with a cup of water with the oven plugged into the standard type outlet that you tried second.

If it works fine, then i would suspect that the GFI outlet has failed and needs to be replaced. "When in doubt, throw it out", as they say.

The microwave does not need a GFI type outlet.

But do be sure the microwave's internal cooling fan is running properly.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will soon be destroyed.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

If the turntable and/or inside light do not work when you cook, that's a bad sign, too.

If the microwave still fails in the standard outlet, it has a problem that needs to be addressed.

If you need further help, contact me directly or post a new detailed help request here and include your full model number from the tag on the oven.

I don't know if it is the microwave that blowing the circuit, but that is what my brother said. It blows the circuit sometimes when they use it. Model# MS-104yc 1.5KW or maybe the combination of the air...

Are you referring to tripping the breaker? The microwave runs on 110 volts, and if you are referring to a central HVAC unit, it runs on 220. No way the one could blow the other, unless you are referring to a window unit. If it is tripping the breaker, you could start by replacing the breaker (can buy at Home Depot or Lowes), and if it still continues to trip the breaker, then it is more than likely the capacitor.

Ge spacemaker microwave, new, keeps tripping the GFI but keeps running

The first thing you need to check is the GFI--when it trips, it definitely should shut off power to the circuit. It may be wired incorrectly, or is faulty. There should be a 20 amp breaker and wiring to the oven.It is also much better is the oven is the only appliance on this circuit. Hope this helps!

GE Profile Spacemaker 2.0 Microwave

If it goes dead or blows the breaker or GFI when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. Other times, it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.
