Try reinstalling the software for starters. But I suspect it is a CCD and or firmware failure in the scanner- time for a new one unless you have some warranty to use up.

printers will only print black and white unless you change the print settings to be color
before you go to print find the printer settings or options and make the default setting color
that way it will print exactly what is sent from the computer to the printer

Hp scanjet2300c scans have a yellow tint and black patches.
The best way to check if the scanner is okay or not is by installing on another computer. First try B&W, then try color. IF it works may be your OS or driver (of the old comp) is corrupted.
