Take the lens out and look the bottom side of the lens. There is a lever that operates the aperture leaves. If the aperture leaves does not move or moving slow, you have oils on the aperture leaves which need cleaning. If the lens is good, the camera's lever that move;s this lens' lever mechanism had gone bad. Take out the lens and watch the aperture control lever moves when you trip the shutter. If it is moving, the problem is with the lens.
Impact damage??? remove the lens and check the barrel for straightness. also the rear lens element must be perfectly straight. some of the latest lenses have a plastic helical gear that can be tapped out with a light hammer and a piece of wood ( 1in X 4in. ) used on the high end of the rear lens, if impacted.
With the new batteries installed, try to hold your camera with your right hand with the lens facing down. Then try to turn turn on the camera while hitting the base on your left palm. Do this several times until the lens retracts.
This might caused by sand or granule of dust stucked on the side of the lens, not forcing it to retract.
hi...The transmission system that moves the lens in and out has a problem with it's gears. There is most likely a gear or an actuator that has fallen out of alignment and is getting stuck at a certain point as the lens comes in/out.There is some disturbacnce of the lens arrangement that is preventing the lens from coming in/out.Any of these symptoms above could trigger the camera to shut itself off to protect itself from further damage. thank u rate me!!!
Before opeing the lens. You cannot check the iris without setting the lens on the body. Engage the lens on to a body and check the iris opening by releasing the camera at "B" speed. While holding the shutter release, move the f/stop ring if the iris work. If not, you cost of repair by technician would run anywher from $35 to $60 so go ahead and be brave. open 4 screws from the back and start digging in. Good Luck. Check the lens. Does the diaphragm move freely when you move the f/stops? Put the lens on f/8 or f/16 and push the pin in, it should move freely and close to the f/stop you set. If not the blades may have oil on them. Also if it is free then set the lens to the smallest aperture and if there is a button push it in to lock for auto aperture set.
take the screws off the bottom cover. there is a small lever pointing toward the front of camera with a black screw on it. gently move it to the left, this will release the lock lever. Now advance the lever and the shutter should fire. if not, it is not repairable. no parts

subaru662,
can you see the lens in the finder move when you zoom out? if not ,the finder lens is stuck.
if it does move when zooming, see if you have a diopter adjustment wheel or sliding knob near the front lens of the finder. if so adjust the lens to your eye.
The mechunism is jammed. Rather than force things, I would take it to a camera service shop that works on Nikon to unassemble the camera to get to the locking pins. Then they can find the fault and service the camera for you.
Slr mirror is stuck. remove the lens and try to slightly move the mirror up and down ( but not forcing it to move!)and pushing the shutter switch. Try also applying lighter fluid in the mechanism while operating or shooting, fluid will help loosen the stucked mechanism.
