SOURCE: Our DVDplayer only plays movies in black and
i had the same problem, it turned out that it was a vedio cable that was not completely pushed in. I felt like a fool because I had checked the connections, they all looked ok but the s-video was just out a little bit and that caused the problem. pused it in and all the color was ok again.
SOURCE: Just got a samsung H1080 DVD player playing black and white only
The component connection should have one red, one green, and one blue connector that will connect to the back of your player and the back of your television. Then there should also be another red and a white connector that should run from the AUDIO L & R OUT of your player to the AUDIO L & R IN beside the Component IN connections on your TV. The yellow cord would normally be running from the VIDEO OUT on the back of your player to one of the VIDEO IN connections of your TV.

SOURCE: the VHS tapes will not playback on the Samsung TV
On these combo units, the VCR will not play using component cables but the dvd's will play just fine.
What you need to do is run a pair of composite (Yellow, red and white) cables and use that for VCR and component (Green, blue, red, white and red) for the dvd player.
Make sure you switch the tv to the corresponding input.
SOURCE: DVD Player stops reading disc Error message :
usually this happens when lens cannot read the the disc. Due to few reason
1 Your disk is scratched
2 Your DVD lens is covered with dust
3 You need to replace DVD lens
Try another few CD/DVD to rectify whether there is any problem with dvd you are trying to play
if this error occurs on all the dvd you played then the most likely proble is with your DVD lens
either its coverd with dust use Disk cleaner if not you got to replace a new DVD lense as per model

Thanks so much for your responses! It turned out that the coaxial cable, fitted with an adaptive end was 1. loose and 2. not plugged in to the correct "jack" or port.
