You may not have removed the piece of packing foam that lies in the track under the printer head. It is a long, narrow dark grey piece of foam that is wedged tightly in the track and is accessible when you lift the top cover. Unlike the pieces of orange tape it is hard to see and it is not shown in any of the setup instructions. If you don't remove it it prevents the paper in the A tray from moving and generates the "paper empty" message.

Try to check the paper media set on the plotter (roll/plain paper). It usually happens if paper media is not the same with the plotter setting. To change it, unload the paper, press the media button on the printer to the right media and load the paper again. It should work now.

Check the "Feed Switch" button on the control panel (below the ON/OFF button) to be sure the green light at the back of the picture is lit. If not, try pushing the button and then printing again. It worked for me and it was so simple!
SOURCE: paper load and jammed problem
I have a problem of canon Mp180 printer. The problem is paper jam. When we start the print process and clear the process. It shows a message cancel printing.

The problem is on the computer, not on the printer.
"A4" is a paper size, just like "Letter" and "Legal".
You probably have your software application, such as Excel, Word, etc., set to paper size = A4.
Do this in your program on the computer:
[File]
[Page Setup]
[Size] "8 1/2 x 11"
... and print your document again.
