Sony Grand WEGA KDP-65XBR2 65" Rear Projection Television Logo

Question about Sony Grand WEGA KDP-65XBR2 65" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Repair or buy new?

Hi- I have a SONY KDP 65XBR2 TV - a wonderful unit that I have had for about 4 years. About 6 months ago, it started to display curved diagonal lines - very visible in dark scenes, not at all in bright ones. The it started to radomly flash bright grren - sometimes this was followed by the TV shutting down - we would either have to turn it back on or, more and more often - unplug it and plug it in again. Although this has not happened for a few days, thelines are still there. Someone told me that the green gun is probably going. The problem is, I live in NYC - no one will servive it here - the want totake it to the shop - which costs $175 just to come and get it. We were given ablu ray player for Xmas - the SOny of course has no HDMI input. We have limited $$ to spend, and, as we see it, have three options. 1. Get it fixed 2. Try to sell it and buy a new TV with HDMI inputs 3. Donate it to a charity and take a tax write-off of $2000 or so. The new HD TV we were thinking of was the Toshiba 65HM167 65" DLP Projection TV - not as good as the Sony we know - but we aren't as solvent as we were in 2002. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! Carl ([email protected])

We had the curved lines on the black screen...always. About 6 months ago we would turn the TV on and it would flash a few times go blue and shut down. We would have to unplug it to get it to come back on. It repeated this about 3 times before it would stay on. The last time it went off it would not come on again even when I unplugged it. Now we are without a TV. This TV was purchased at Circuit City and you can't get anything out of them now. I called Best Buy and they could not find the model number but said they would come service it to see if they could fix it. If I could find out the part number they would order it. Please offere me some hope. Thank you. Bonnie Tittle

I would guess your problem is more likely the green drive bd (the circuit bd mounted to the neck of the green tube) it might be the tube but it doesn't have to be and I have seen many drive problems on sonys. I think the usually call it the CG board if you want to locate it and put it on it probably is relatively inexpensive. By the way my opinion for what it is worth the Toshiba is much better than the Sony.

Where can I buy OEM CRT (red, gree, and blue) for KDP-65XBR2?

I think none are available any more--you may find a company who will rebuild the tube but that is expensive.

Hello, I have a problem with my sony rear projection tv. When I try to turn it on the standby lights blink but it odes not turn on. I turned it on using display 5 vol- power and it did turn on and know it...

You need to count the number of blinks between the pause. Most common is 9 blinks. Also- after you press POWER, do you hear a "click" or not? If no click and 9 blinks, you probably have a "zero cross failure" and have two options:

(1) Replace the "G" board (part # A1054157A) or have it repaired (they repair it on eBay for about $40. You ship them the bad board and they either repair and return or ship you a different repaired board) A new board costs about $80- without having to send them your board.

(2) Repair the board yourself- by replacing the two diodes on the "G" Board - (D6301 which is on top- by the small transformer) and (D116 which is an SMT component on the bottom of the board- it takes VERY steady hands and a good solder iron). The parts should cost less than $25 and are available on eBay by searching for "sony a1054157a".

Out of nowhere my tv went blank..what could had caused it?

projection TV`s have integrated protection circuits
built into the circuit design, these circuits turn the
power off automatically when a fault has bin detected this
is in order to prevent a more costly repair, these circuits monitor
power supply , vertical and horizontal deflection
over voltage, or x ray, and also faults with convergence circuits.
Diagnosing these faults require test equipment and a good knowledge of
electronic repair techniques, and also a repair manual.
