How to repair light bulb wiring on a maytag dryer

Have replaced the light bulb - still not working. I see three wires coming from light bulb socket and three places to connect - however, should all three be connected or is one a ground wire. I recently had a technician replace the thermostat. The light bulb was working before this repair. I am thinking a connection came loose during the repair but want to KNOW how to fix and not do something wrong. thank you

SOURCE: four prong plug to three prong plug

Kalola,
You can if you want to, but it's not generally necessary. Here's a picture of a 3 prong configuration with a ground strap...
df8caf5.jpg

That green wire with the yellow stripe is a ground and it is most definitely connected to the cabinet somewhere. So it will serve as the ground strap (in the above picture).

Here's the thing... say you were going from a 3 prong to a 4 prong. That is, the dryer was originally "designed" for a 3 prong. This means you'd have to "retrofit" it a bit. Take a look at this pic... ( I made this for someone else, so please disregard my somewhat hostile remarks, OK?)

The ground strap has been removed and has been replaced by the ground to the frame. Yours probably does NOT have a ground strap, though... yours uses that Green/Yellow wire for frame ground.

All of that to say this. Don't lose sleep over it. Ya done good.

Broke the light bulb in my dryer off in socket it threw sparks now my dryer won't work. Checked breaker that's not the problem. What could it be?

If the light bulb in your dryer broke off in the socket and caused sparks, it's possible that the electrical system in the dryer has been damaged. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

1.Start by unplugging the dryer.

2. If there are any broken pieces of the light bulb still in the socket, use needle-nose pliers or another suitable tool to remove them. Be sure to do this with caution to avoid electrical shock.

3. Inspect the area around the light bulb socket for any burnt wires, connectors, or components. If you find any damaged parts, they may need to be replaced.

4. Dryers often have thermal fuses or thermal cut-offs that can blow if there's a surge or overheating. Check the dryer's user manual to locate these components and check if they are intact. If a fuse is blown, replace it with the same type and amperage.

5. Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the dryer outlet. Ensure that you are getting the correct voltage (typically 240 volts for a dryer in the United States). If the voltage is incorrect, there may be an issue with the electrical supply or the outlet itself.

6. If you have the skills and confidence, you may open the dryer cabinet and inspect the internal wiring. Look for any burnt or damaged wires and connections. If you find any, you may need to repair or replace the affected parts.

7. If you are not comfortable or experienced with electrical repairs, it's advisable to seek the help of a professional appliance repair technician. They can thoroughly diagnose the issue and perform any necessary repairs or replacements.

I broke my dryer light bulb off in the socket. It threw some sparks and now my dryer doesn't work. Why?

Breaking a light bulb off in the socket and experiencing sparks could lead to damage within the electrical system of the dryer. The sparks likely indicated a short circuit or an electrical issue. Here are some potential reasons why your dryer might not be working after this incident:

1. The sparks may have caused a surge that blew a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. Even if you've checked the main breaker, your dryer might have a dedicated circuit breaker or fuse in the electrical panel. Verify and reset or replace any blown fuses or reset the circuit breaker.

2. The broken light bulb and sparks may have damaged the light bulb socket or the wiring connected to it. Inspect the socket and surrounding wiring for any signs of burning, melting, or damage. If the socket is compromised, it may need to be replaced.

3. Sparks could have caused damage to internal wiring in the dryer. Carefully open the dryer cabinet (after disconnecting power) and inspect the internal wiring for any visible signs of damage, such as burnt wires or connections.

4. Dryers often have safety features like thermal fuses or safety thermostats to prevent overheating. If these components were affected by the sparks, they might have blown or tripped. Check and replace any faulty thermal fuses or safety thermostats.

5. The sparks could have damaged the electronic control board of the dryer. If the control board is malfunctioning, it might prevent the dryer from operating correctly. A professional technician may need to inspect and replace the control board if necessary.

6 .The sparks might have affected other electrical components within the dryer, such as relays, switches, or the motor. A comprehensive inspection by a qualified technician may be required to identify and fix these issues.

It's essential to approach any electrical repairs with caution, and if you're not comfortable or experienced, it's recommended to consult a professional appliance repair technician. They can conduct a thorough diagnosis and perform the necessary repairs to ensure the dryer is safe and functional.

Why does my right rear tail lamp not work when fuse is good?

Step 1

Check the socket. Plug in the connector plug and remove the bulb. Touch the contact inside the socket. If the tester lights, the socket is good. The socket and wire running to the plug should be replaced if the tester doesn't light.
Step 2

Check the bulb with the ground wire. The bulb must be in its socket. The ground wire running to the socket should be black or brown. Stab the tester through the insulation. If the tester lights, the bulb is good. Replace the bulb if it doesn't light.

Check the ground wire. Remove some of the insulation around the ground wire. Twist one end of the extra wire around the exposed ground wire. Touch the other end to a solid piece of metal. If the brake light comes on, the ground wire is bad.

06 Citroen Relay.number plate lights do not work tried new bulbs still not working.Advise? advise is Tailgate wiring issues could cause that.Is a common fault? repair? Does wiring loom need replacing?

hi Richard
yes wiring could be the problem but your wiring loom should not need replacing may only need repair, check your lic. plate bulb socket for power with the running lights on / check wire from bulb to left/right side for cracks in the insulation of the wire (looking for any shorts)
the lic. plate lights get power from the tail lights (running lights) if your running lights are not working also u may have a blown fuse
if not look for a brake/cut in the wire going from the tail lights to
lic. plate light sockets.

  1. Light bulbIf your microwave light bulb is not working, perhaps it has blown. The first step is to replace the bulb and power on the microwave. If this does not correct the issue, the next step is to check the socket and wiring to verify if that is the problem.
  2. Light bulb socket & main control boardIf your microwave light bulb is not working after the installation of a new bulb, check the light socket as well as the wiring to ensure they are properly operating. If these sources are functioning properly, the next step is to check for a faulty control board as a possible root cause to your microwave light bulb malfunction.

I have a maytag gas dryer mgdx500xw, with door open and light on, circuit breaker blows, with door closed it does not, if I remove the bulb, it won't blow either way. Weird?

the return neutral wire from the bulb has to have a bare spot on it touching the metallic case somewhere in the dryer, when you remove the bulb you just isolate the bare spot on the neutral wire from the hot wire

The brake light comes on.. but the backlight does not work.. the wiring seems to be fine as does the bulb

Either the wire connection under the seat has unplugged or broken or , if you look into the bulb socket , one of the bulb contact points has sunk into the contact plate and is now longer touching the bulb. This is more common than you would think. I have fixed many sockets by replacing the contact plate. If you tilt the plate the spring behind it will push it out. You can take the contact plate out of almost any other socket or sometimes by new ones . Feed the new contact wires through the spring and socket and solder the old wire connectors on. That is how you repair an expensive light socket cheaply.

Does the neptune dryer have a universal plug?

Dryers do not come with cords you have to buy them separately. Some houses have a three-wire system, which requires a three wire dryer cord. Others have a four-wire system, which requires a four-wire cord. This page will explain more on this as well as how to install a dryer cord. http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/dryer-cord.html
