When selecting cook popcorn a message comes up that says "the current sensor feature has been interrupted by opening the door. To resume interruption close door and press start". We open the door and re-close it and then it shuts off and the numbers on the display are 8888. After a few seconds it says reset clock. Also, this problem is intermittently on other selection.

Re: Microwave stops with message that does not work
You probably have a bad connection on the cirucit board and/or an intermittent door switch.
If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

There is a fan inside that blows air across the electromagnet that cooks your food. It gets hot! The fan is most likely broken or spinning to slow to keep the electromagnet cool enough. There is a thermal sensor on the electromagnet to shut off the oven if it gets to hot to prevent it from catching on fire or melting everything inside the oven control area.
First of all, you should not open the door when the unit is in operation. This may cause this problem. The light should come on when the door is open, even if interrupting a cook cycle. I'm not sure then that I am understanding the description of the problem.
The sensor errors are probably just from opening the door and interrupting the sensor cook cycle.
By the way, you should always press "Stop" before opening the door of a running microwave. Otherwise, the door switches will prematurely fail.
I would first check the door switches and their mounts. See this help file.

What you are to do to solve the problem is to do a general troubleshooting on your oven below are instruction to follow.
The Microwave is a counter top model with a variety of preset
cooking options, including timed cooking at a variety of power levels and
sensor-cooking settings for popcorn, rice, beverages and single-serving
The sensor cooking and reheating features detect increasing
humidity levels inside the microwave and automatically adjust cooking
time for various types and amounts of food. This microwave
also includes a turntable and an electronic control panel.
Instructions below are step by step solution for your oven
to see if the microwave will start. If it will not start and the
display panel is blank, you may have a power problem. Unplug the
microwave and then plug it back in, making sure that all three prongs
of the power cord are fully inserted into the wall outlet. If this
doesn't work, check your home's fuse box. Reset the circuit breaker to
restore if necessary.
that the microwave door is fully closed. Press the Clear/Off button to
cancel any previous cooking instructions. Re-enter your cooking
program, including cooking time and food weight if necessary, and press
"Err" appears on the microwave display, press the Clear/Off button and
reenter your cooking program. The "Err" message will appear during the
sensor-controlled programs (Popcorn, Rice, Beverage or Reheat) if the
door is opened before steam is detected or if no steam was detected
within the maximum amount of time allowed by the microwave. Be sure to
leave the door closed during these programs, at least until time is
shown counting down on the display panel.
your control panel will not work or if an "L" is displayed on the
screen, press and hold the Clear/Off button for a full three seconds to
unlock the control panel.
your sensor reheat program is resulting in under- or overcooked food,
first try decreasing the amount of food in the microwave; the sensor
programs are designed for single servings of food. The sensor reheat
function works by measuring humidity inside the microwave--do not use a
tightly-covered dish with this setting because no moisture will be able
to escape and the food will overcook. Be sure that cooking containers
are dry; moist containers will increase the humidity in the microwave
and mislead the sensor, resulting in undercooked food.
your turntable is not rotating, first check to ensure that your food
container is positioned so that it can freely rotate without hitting
the microwave's interior walls; using a smaller food container can fix
this problem. If the turntable still will not rotate, lift the
turntable from its support and replace it carefully, ensuring that it
rests evenly on its support.
If the microwave functions normally while cooking everything else, but is only burning popcorn, there is no component problem that will cause this. You cannot adjust or replace any internal component to make it not burn popcorn. All power levels and program options are contolled by the consumer at the control panel. Refer to your owner;s manual for their recommendations.
If the oven is equipped with a popcorn feature button, it is programmed for a recommended power level and time. This is an ESTIMATED program feature. The manufacturers of both the oven and the popcorn will also give directions that tell you to turn the oven off when the popping slows to about a pop every 2 seconds. Failure to do so can result in burning.
If the microwave does not come with a popcorn feature button, the manufacturers of the popcorn have directions on the outside of the box that tell you what POWER LEVEL and TIME to set the oven on for the desired result. Again, the you still have to listen as the bag pops to ensure it does not burn.
In addition, on some microwave ovens, there is a feature that allows you to select the SIZE of the popcorn bag. Some popcorn manufacturers have smaller snack size bags that don't take as long to pop. You have to select the appropriate size to get the correct program option.
In any case, you never are to place popcorn in a microwave oven and walk away from it. All these program features are ESTIMATIONS based on manufacturers testing and recommendations for the best results. All microwave ovens are different and operate at different power levels. Your best judge is to listen as it pops.
The problem appears, at least in part, to the door latch circuitry which cannot be serviced by the owner. If the unit is still in warranty, call GE customer care. If not, replacing the unit is your best bet. I just bought a new GE 1100 watt oven with great features for less than $100 If the door dosen't latch correctly, you could be exposed to dangerous microwave energy.
