SONY KP-53H530 TV - distorted picture

The picture is "pulled in" to the middle of the screen in a parabola, from both the top and bottom. Plus there are "ghosts" and the colors aren't right. It is this way for input both from our standard cable service and from the DVD player. It was fine last night when I went to bed; and messed up this morning from the first moment I turned it on.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I have a sony kp-41t65 tv acting like computer screen out of whac

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Focus problem, see Green and Red misalignment;

this could be caused by the loss of the power to the converge circuit or the failure of the converge chips-stk-xxx-xxx if the problem pops in and out it's a connection problem.

It sounds like you have a bad I/O board. That's the input/output board that everything plugs in to.

Image is totally distorted

Did you also replace the bias resistors required when you converted from STK392-110 to the higher STK392-xxx modules? If I wer you I would go back to the orginal modules only new ones. Then I would also get a schematic to test the voltage levels on the chips to make sure they are the same as on the schematic.

Picture Distortion

you have a convergence problem.. If you understand how this works then you can go into the set find the convergence ic's and replace them and sometimes you need to do some alighnment as well. Its always best though to let a service tech do a job like this as he will have all the proper equipment to adjust and troubleshoot the set Good luck
