SOURCE: how do I change the optical block in a sony tv

Disconnecting wiring from power supply block

This step may be optional, if power supply block must be transferred to purchased replacement optical block. Undo the blue plastic-coated wire holders to release the two wire bundles. Disconnect the connectors shown with the dotted lines in the photo below. One, which presumably provides power, is disconnected directly from the power supply block, and the other is a regular wire connector.a837b7e.jpg

Disconnecting the wiring from the optical block circuit board (C Board)

Carefully pull up on the three wire connectors directly connected to the top of the C Board:

Final wire disconnection from C Board

Remove the screw and gently pull the blue ribbon ribbon cable out of the side of the C Board:

Your optical block should now be entirely free of the TV and ready to ship. I recommend adding specific protection for the projection lens, then sealing the whole unit in a bag to prevent infiltration of dust or packing materials, then carefully packaging it with substantial padding.

Removing the projection lamp (in cases where you are installing a purchased replacement optical block)

Loosen the hex screw next to the projection lamp housing, and pull the lamp and housing outward from the metal clips.

KDS-R70XBR2, purchased 2006. Bad optical block. ...

This is not illegal. If you were purchasing the part outright, the core charge would be included in the cost of the part and then you would be able to keep it. Not sure why you would want the part anyway, but most replacement parts do have a core charge. This is true for automotive, appliance, and many other industries. Also, just so you know, the optical block that Sony is providing you will be far superior to the original unit. The color performance and optical block life were improved greatly with the revisions Sony made to these units. Sony is the only LCOS manufacture that actually addressed and corrected the problems that occured with this type of display. You should let them do what they need to to get your TV back into working order.

If this is a KDSR50XBR1 or a KDSR60XBR1,
It is a bad Optical Block and you need to call Sony at 1-800-222-SONY asap to get a exstended warrenty repair. If it is not, and it is out of warrenty I would still call to see what they will do. In either case, it is a Optical Block causing the problem.
Hope this Helps,

It is definitely a bad optical block. Sony was offering an optical block replacement under warranty until June of this year, but it has ended now. Ballpark estimate is $700 to $1000 to have the optical block replaced.

Green Smear

It sounds like your optical block has failed. If you can see the picture but it has a green smear through the picture, this is likely the problem. Sony has extended the warranty on the optical block and is covering parts and labor for the repair. Contact Sony at 800-222-SONY to schedule a tech to look at the TV and replace the optical block
