Panasonic PV-DF2004 20 in. TV/VCR/DVD Combo Logo

DVD player The DVD player doesn't work. When a DVD is inserted, the player makes noise as if loading the disc and the screen says "reading", but then stops, and seems to try again. This happens 4 times before stating "this type of disc cannot be played. please insert a different disc". I have tried countless DVD's, all of which work on any other DVD player, but do not work on this player. (and no, the DVD's aren't burned, theyre store bought).

have 2 of these units. neither dvd works. both worked for a short time. now both have the same error you get. I think it is a manufacturers defect.

I have the same problem with my home unit, I have access to another at work that works fine. I tore apart my home unit (being experienced in electronics) and tore the dvd player out to examine. I could not access the lens to clean, and had no power source to bench check unit. I am now wondering if the unit is even spinning up and checking this is my next step.

Follow-up to Aug 04 response: I spent a few hours today tearing mine apart (3 times, once for a **** mistake of not reconnecting all wires). I verified unit spins with a dvd, checking the position when open/closing. Tore off back case and retore dvd player out of unit, took time to fully take off case and gently clean laser lens, reconnecting dvd to frame, and checking it out with several discs (TIP: If you do this, tape open the vcr door so it will catch when you put on the cover, otherwise will not open auto when ejecting). I now believe the problem is at the component level or laser is out of alignment, both mean it is not efficient to repair. Also, I just saw on e-bay SEVERAL units of the same model being sold for .99-$49.99 because of the dvd not working. I may try contacting Panasonic and try to purchase the whole dvd unit to replace if reasonably priced.

Usually if "no disc" the optical unit in the player is either dirty or bad.

If bad cheaper to buy a new unit as individual parts are not usually sold for this type of equipment.

At loadup.

check your disc's that it's not putting a mark on them...

sounds like the laser is hitting the disk trying to get it to focus,
thus it's either the spindal is to low or not moving or the laser is week or not in the correct position

My DVD player wont read a disc

There are several things you can do to try and solve your problem: Make sure that the DVDs you try to play are encoded for the right region. Make sure that the transportation lock (usually a plastic screw on the bottom of the unit), is not engaged. Turn off player with disc inserted, unplug temporarily from wall outlet, plug back in and turn back on.
