Maxtor Onetouch 500GB went dead

I have the Maxtor OneTouch 500GB today it died on me. The PC does not recognize the drive at all. (XP and Vista)

When I plug the power in I get a flash on the light and then it goes out. Sometimes it stays on. However, I can hear the HD turning and every 7 seconds while the HD is turning I get a sound as if some thing grinds for a mili second. On occasions the PC will sound the noise as if it sees the HD but to no evail it never maps the drive.

Sometimes when I insert the power cable the bubble indicates that the Driver to the Maxtor Onetouch is installing.

if you have any suggesstions please let me know. I have 1 year of edited video on this HD and need to back it up.

I assume it does because I am getting power or at least I assume I am because the light works and the HD is turning? Could the USB power this much up?

Yes, I have tried it on two Vista machines and an XP unit.

    Thanks.

I changed my windows to vista and then i tried to re-install my maxtor one Touch 4 mini 250 GB but the computer can not recognize it, so plz tell me what is the steps to re-install thx

By 'install' I think you mean install Maxtor Manager, but perhaps you have files which were saved by 'drag-and-drop' with the previous OS. These might be recovered the same way, even in Vista, if you can open the OneTouch from Control Panel. To use Manager with the OneTouch which had stuff saved via Manager with a different OS, you could first try to recover the files with Manager installed on another PC using the old OS version. Then format the OneTouch through Control Panel in Vista and with luck Manager will recognise it. If it does not, and you can see the drive in My Computer, then uninstall Manager (which might be corrupt) and try re-installing it. Regards Chas

When I click on My computer, the maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus

Hi there,
You can try installing the drivers for the hard disk. Usually XP and vista operating systems detect the drives and install the drivers by themselves. But sometimes there are compatibility issues, which then require manual installation of drivers. I wonder what the operating system on your computer is. Please get back to me if you need further assistance.
Hope this helps :)

VISTA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MY EXTERNAL DRIVE IT WILL NOT SHOW UP IN THE COMPUTER SECTION BUT IT SHOWS UP AS A TITLE NAME IN THE DEVICE MANAGER

The drivers are not compatible with Vista. Return it for one that is compatible or switch OS back to XP. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Installing the external drive

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.
Find drive letter other than your local drive.
Usually called "removable disk".

Hello doc323,

In a blog (see the link below) on 29 May 2008, William Jones mentions advanced partition management for Macs and PC's

Mr. Jones recommends the following $49.00 program for non-destructive partition management.
