I think it would make the most sense to reinstall Vista with a functional Vista disc (should be DVD). Alternatively you can check HP's Website for XP drivers which may not exist if it came with Vista. You could also reinstall Ubuntu. If you want a dual boot with Ubuntu you should install Windows first and Ubuntu will provide that option when setting it up and allow you to resize the Windows partition and create separate partitions for Ubuntu.

Linux install problem

You are going to create a new partition for the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Apparently, you are trying to overlay Ubuntu over Vista and it's no going to happen.

Before installing the operating system, I suggest that you view the tutorial video clip by clicking on the link.

How to remove Ubuntu from a Vista dual-boot config

On my new PC I wanted (still want) to have toa go with Linux. I chose to experiment with Ubuntu. I downloaded thedesktop CD, burned it, freed up some disk space (inside Vista) andloaded up Ubuntu from the CD. After some experimenting I figured outhow to install Ubuntu in the empty disk space and it all worked fine(GRUB took over my booting (recognized Vista automatically!) and Ubuntuloaded up fine).

Then I tried to install my GPU drivers andeverything went wrong.. For some reason Ubuntu wouldn't boot anymore(failed to load X-Server or something). I was completely lost andwanted to remove Ubuntu.

This is where things start to get really messy!

Ifyou simply remove the Ubuntu partition, GRUB (Linux boot loader) willstill be on your PC (in control). It will trip out, as the Ubuntupartition will be removed.. Bad thing!

So you need to restore your Master Boot Record (MBR) for Vista (so that Vista will handle the booting, not GRUB).

Googleonly pointed me to sites that explained how to REMOVE VISTA, whichisn't what I wanted. Many sites talked about the 'fixmbr' command, butthis is really only available in Windows XP.

So how do you restore your MBR for Windows Vista?

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr, and then press ENTER.

That'sit. Now when you reboot your PC, Vista will load automatically... Youcan now safely boot using your Ubuntu desktop CD, to use the built inGnome Partition Manager to remove your Ubuntu partition!

I HAVE DEMO VERSION FOR ONE MONTHSOF VISTA HOME BASIC NOW MY LAPTOP NOT STARTING IT REQUIRED PRODUCT KEY

The demo version was set to expire quite some time ago... Either format the system installing a new operating system or buy a registration key for Windows Vista. If you've got it, I would install Windows XP Professional (SP3 is preferred). If you do not currently have an operating installer disk, you can download some free ones such as these:

Linux Mint
Ubuntu
Fedora

As mentioned, they are completely free and do not require you to register them. To install them you will need to have a CD (or CD/DVD) burner. Afterward download the .iso image to the computer with the CD/DVD burner. Then use a program such as ImgBurn to burn the image to the disk. Once done, stick the disk into the CD/DVD drive of the computer with the Vista installation. Then start the computer and use the boot option to boot from the CD/DVD disk (Generally a message during startup will read similar to "Press F12 for boot options." Press the key associated with the message continually (in this case, F12) to bring up the boot selection screen). Sometimes you will be asked to press any key to continue booting from the CD. As it said, press any key and you will boot from the CD.

Hopefully you will be able to resolve your problem. Just remember, installing a new operating system will erase ALL data on the hard-drive. So if you have precious files on the hard-drive, I would not recommend installing a new operating system.

Let us know how things turn out, or if you require any further assistance.
