Slow computer needs help!

My computer, a Gateway 2000 model with Windows XP Pro, is soooooo, slow. I have to run disk cleaner on it every time I use it for it to be bearable, then it is still slow. I realize that at it's age not to expect alot more but I was wondering if you could tell me how to clean up files I do not need anymore, find files I don't need that are not easily seen, without crashing my system which I have done twice already.

Okay, I done the control panel and I still have these things that Im not sure about. Learn player 2, Real Player Basic, View Point Media Player, Quick Time, & Pure Networks Port Magic. Which of these do I keep and which do I remove? Then I tried the msconfig and when I disabled all startup I still had Services, Boot.INI, Win.INI, System.INI, and general to do something with. Which I left alone because I didn't know what to do there. Then I had Normal Startup, Diagnostic Startup, And Selective Startup that I also didn't know what to do with. The one thing that I did do I changed because I couldn't get online anymore or open several things. So this is where we are. Where do we go from here? Oh, and as of right now I don't have any antivirus except what Aol has on their email and such. I've just gotten this thing going again on the first after my last big crash and I haven't decided what to use yet. I have a Defender Pro And a Norton but the Defender seemed to use alot of space also, I haven't tried the Norton yet. Thanks, Gingerleigh.

Another thing you might check is if you have Norton... Norton Antivirus has been known to slow PC's down alot, so if thats the case id uninstall that and get a free antivirus like AVG. To do a clean up Go to start - Accesories - System Tools - Disk Clean Up . Then you might wanna try Defrah That too is also located under System tool using the method above to get to it.

First of all you need to do the old fashion clean up which which is to go into control panel >>the add and remove programs>>then unistall any programs that you don't need like toolbars etc...all that you don't need..... thats the safest way ....then u may want to Go to Start>>run>>and type msconfig go to startup...and lets disable all those process for now ....the choose apply and ok ..it should ask that you restart your system......Go ahead and choose restart ... that should your system start up much quicker than befoere.... another thing is: what anti virus software are u using on your PC ...if it is norton then uninstall that becasue that is a memory HOG... you may want to consider freeavg... let me know how it goes bapplay

  • Anonymous May 03, 2007

normally the startup section is the only thing that you may want to tamper with ....beyond that i would recommend that you download registry cleaner and run that and also go witht eh freeavg as your antivirus

Hp dv 2000 it seems like go slow

Try two Freeware programs , 1, CCLEANER: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ This freeware program has many useful tools. The cleaner and Registry cleaner will remove the junk that accumulates in the computer over time and frees up disk space. In the TOOLS section, STARTUP section, disable ALL unnecessary startup programs. 2, MALWAREBYTES: http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ In the install UNCHECK the TRIAL PRO version, you want the freeware version. Run a FULL scan, delete ALL results, reboot. Disable ALL toolbars from your web browsers, they are killers on browser speed. Here are some tips to increase speed: http://www.wikihow.com/Speed-up-a-Windows-XP-Computer

Hi, My laptop taking so much time to switch on and it became very slow. Please tell me the soluiton for it.

Sometimes slow booting of computers and Laptops are caused by viruses and spywares. Also, a High temperatured Processor makes a computer slow.
Here are some solutions you might want to try.
  1. If you have a installed antivirus in your computer, i suggest you update your Antivirus and then Start scanning your computer for possible viruses and spywares.
  2. If viruses and Spywares are not the problem, maybe your Processor is feeling to much heat. I suggest you use Laptop Coolers like this one. heifentrixx_11.jpg
  3. This will help you cool down you Processor and Laptop.
Hope my solution will help. Thanks for using Fixya!

How can I make my laptop works faster?

You don't say what OS, assuming XP
I'd try the following:
Run windows disk cleanup and defrag
Run a cleanup program like ccleaner
Run a registry cleaner like regcure or eusing
If that doesn't help add more memory (you should have at least 1GB and preferably 2) or switch to Linux :-)
