Most of the time with these things, the problem spot is not any of the stuff you mentioned. It's a stupid little switching transistor soldered to the mainboard. You can get a ten pack at Radio Shack for like 3 bucks, and there is seldom more than one on the board.

Dead. External power supply is good 12V but monitor wont turn on.

my 12 power supply was only 500ma, not the 4a needed. Got the monitor to power up but now the screen goes dark after 2 sec. Looks like a bad backlight issue. I'll replace the inverter board.

thanks

Acer AL1714

The inverters often fail from capacitors that have lost so much of their original capacitance and developed losses great enough to disable the circuit.

If you can identify the inverter section, you might want to replace any capacitors you see - a 'shotgun' approach, since locating the defective cap requires a fairly wide range capacitance meter with loss (DF) measurement feature unless you are lucky enough to locate one with a bulging top or crystalline deposits around the base. These instruments cost upwards of $200 so for a single use it doesn't make sense.  About the only part in that circuit that might be unique is the transformer so everything else can be bought or substituted. The lamp itself could have failed and these are available under similar part numbers from multiple sources. If the lamp has strong discoloration toward the ends, I would replace this first.

Mag Monitor LT776s 17 flat

Sounds like an inverter problem. If the power supply is internal replace the capacitors coming out of the voltage regulators. These are usually 1000mf and/or 470mf. If that doesn't do the trick look up the numbers on the 8-pin chips that drive the secondary transformers on the inverter to see if they are getting the right voltages.
Good Luck!

Flickeing like a dying fluorescent light bulb

Actually this is a 'warning' signal from your lcd monitor. The problem is your lcd ccfl lamp are near to their life, need to change. The ccfl lamp like our home fluorescent lamp, when the lamp need to dead, the lamp will flickering first, after some time, will totally off(dead). So, this is a signal for you. Some lcd monitor, when their inverter board are using fairchild inverter ic(oz series), will easily shutdown your monitor when they detected some flickering on your screen (ccfl lamp). 19"ViewSonic LCD Monitor wont work at all !!

If you have the pc on and the monitor light stays green, take a flashlight to the screen. If you can see the images while shining the flashlight into the screen, they will be hard to see but they will be viewable, then its most likely the back light. The vx900 takes 4 bulbs and they are about $12 US each. Anyone who knows how to solder should be able to replace them.
