I need to use a RCA remote to program a DVD and with out the codes and program a tv

Try writing to RCA Customer Service to see if it is a: feasible, and b: doable if they send you the right codes. If they elect to play ball, and they might if you offer to buy a new one as well, you will get a sheet of microscopic print that lists several paragraphs of models which will accept a particular set of codes you program into the remote, and then try that combination on all of your equipment, then try to next code on the list, ad nauseum, until you accidently find a combination that works. I have (eventually even gotten old, old equipment working in that way, including an off-off-off brand tv with all of the buttons on the front removed (toddler time) including the power button. Using some obscure setting for a generic remote that cost all of five or eight dollars gave me power on/off, volume, channel up-and-down, direct channel entry, input selection, and even a feature I did not know the tv had, a timer to have it shut itself off after a programmable number of minutes. If you have no such luck getting such a sheet of codes from the maker of the remote you want to add new functionality to (presumably, your existing remote does things that a "generic" remote may not, like setting gamma levels, color temperature, and muffler belt tension) which is the only good reason to hold onto it RATHER THAN FORK OVER FIVE OR TEN DOLLARS TO BUY A GENERIC REMOTE THAT WILL DUPLICATE THE CONTROLS YOU HAVE AND LET YOU CONTROL OTHER DEVICES AS WELL. I even have an extra one I could sell you, except it would cost more in postage than it would take to go to Walgreen's or KMart and buy a generic remote (with the pages of microscopic type listing suggestions of from one to several dozen possibilities for a CD player, a cassette tape recorder/player, a vcr, a tv set, etc. and you just put aside an afternoon to try entering different numbers for that remote with a given component, then trying the next number, and so on. Eventually you should hit something that works; write that "combination code" down, and move on don the line, determining what make of VCR you have, looking at that paragraph of codes, sighing deeply, and beginning to, again, trying code after code, attempting to "do something" with the remote after punching in a particular code, and then starting over with the next number. For $150-$400 yon by remote which not only let you manually program setting in this way, but also will try a series of attempts automatically until it finds a set of commands that "work". Best of all, if you have the original remote(s), for under $500 you can buy univeral "learning" remotes, that will take ALL your remotes, like the one you are holding, tell the Universal Remote what your programming, i.e. a VCR, and place the two remotes head-to-hear and press and hold down the fast-forward button on the "old" vcr remote, while simultaneously storing the correct "codes" into the "new" remote, then hitting save, and from that point on, your tablet or monster remote will control you VCR; then you perform the same steps with your stereo amplifier(s), receivers, phonographs, etc. The you can take all the batteries out of the remotes that came with each unit, and tape them securely to the face or back of the remote (so that you can use the remote to re-program the big remote again) and in that way you keep the battery from corroding in place due to inactivity and the eventual breakdown of almost any battery if given too much time: the same chemical reaction that makes the battery useful later, after not being able to power a device properly, goes "dead' and then, gasp, starts corroding away the metal springs and tabs in the battery cell cavity on the back or side of the remote. Try the $5-$10 remote idea first, and if that doesn't do it for you, consider if your setup would benefit from a big-time "universal" remote, with fancy color screens to show you what device it is currently controlling. P.S. I eventually wrote down the settings for the tv, teh stereo receiver, the cd player, the vcr codes, etc., on a cut-down 3x5" card, covered with wide package sealing tape, on the back of the el cheapo remote, so that I could look at the back, and know that if I was going to use it to control the TV, I had a four digit number written down which, after pressing a certain key on the front of the remote, followed by the special code that transformed the remote into a tv remote ("3145") and then the equivalent of an [enter] key. Then I had a tv remote. to turn the stereo, I would look at the back of the remote, flip it back over, enter a code ("8989") and the channel up and down buttons would let me traverse the radio dial, etc, and best of all, the volume and tone controls are right back at your fingertips. Enter a new code to start up the cd player, skip to a certain song, then turn the remote back into a controller for the receiver, etc. There are probably apps that do this for the iPad, maybe Android devices, perhaps even iPhones or SIIIs camera/phones/mp3 players.
