Hdd replaced (as old one had failed) new hdd is not recognised. checked in bios and found the hdd, although installed, wasn't detected
If you are installing Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

You are correct your bios needs to be upgraded
Go to Toshiba's site and, download the upgrade and, follow the directions to install it then;reboot.
Do not unplug or, turn off the computer during the upgrade for any reason and, have the battery installed and, fully charged when you start the procedure.

you could try removing the cmos battery in the bottom of the laptop look in manual to see how or you could install using usb external dvdrom set bios to boot from usb dvdrom first

Shouldn't have any problems on the A10 series working with a 160GB drive, so long as it's an ATA/IDE type with a 44-pin connector. If it's not recognizing the drive, could it be that the pins were not precisely lined-up with the IDE connector? I'd remove the drive, make sure the pins are still all straight, reinsert it into the HDD compartment and see if it makes a difference.

Hey Chris, Thanks for your reply.. the thing is that the Bios does not have any of those options. Also its a laptop and has the magnetic strip connector i'm wondering if that would be applicable.. one thing i have noticed the model of the hdd i have replaced the old one with seems to be a slightly different model rather then being a 1807 like the old one it is actually an 1820, i don't know if that could be the problem. I have ordered the 1807 model and am currently awaiting delivery. If this fixes the problem I shall update you here. Thanks for your input :)
