The machine works fine in upright mode with the hose and tools or on bare floors. In carpet mode it is very hard to push and the belt overheats to the point of smoking. I took off the beater brush and it rotates freely when you hold the plastic end pieces. When it is off I can't find anything binding or rubbing. The self-propel feature works ok, and does not affect this problem.
I'm baffled- any ideas?

Re: problem with use on carpet
Very professional and useful account there of the problem and investigation so far!
Unless you've got evidence that your machine is damaging the carpet, I'd be inclined to put a new belt on and see if that fixes it.
Carpet makes the beater/brush roller much harder to turn than bare floor does, and this can be enough to start a loose belt slipping (after which things don't naturally improve themselves).

There is an adjustment for carpet and for hard surfaces. Have switched it from carpet to a hard surface. When on carpet it sets up higher on a hard surface it should set lower. If it is to low it work properly either.
• tanks are not sealed into receivers • faulty auto load receiver • pinched/clogged line • defective component allowing air into system • pump not mounted so it can move freely • defective bridge rectifier • clogged heater • defective pump • defective circuit board * spray nozzles are clogged
If your machine does not include the brush control, it will only be suitable for vacuuming carpeted surfaces and we'd advise against using it on hard floors in upright mode. However, you can use the hose and wand to vacuum hard floors and we have several suitable hard floor tools available which may help.
I hope this helps - if you'd like further advice you can reach our freephone Helpline on 0800 298 0298. Just to let you know, our Helpline is available from 7am-10pm, 7 days a week. Best wishes, JackDyson Online Customer Supporthttp://www.dyson.co.uk
Check the axles of the wheels for debris accumulation. Also, make sure the height is set for the type of carpet that you have. Try pushing the machine on a bare floor--is it hard to move there also? Hope this helps!
The brush control is designed to switch the brush bar off automatically when you stand the machine back into the upright position. It is designed this way to protect any delicate floor surfaces when you have the machine switched on and upright and when you are using the hose.
If the brush control should be in the centre position and move forward to the "on" position when you release the head. If it is not doing this, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).
replace the belt the belt sounds like its worn or stretched the belts turn at high rpms and get very hot and soon just ware out they work fine on floors but when it comes to carpet they slow down, i hope this works out thanks

How do you change machine from carpet cleaning to hard floor cleaning? Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The Bissell 9500 ProHeat 2X Clean Shot Upright are mainly designed to do mostly carpet, you can use it for bare floors, but for good wood floors I would use less water and pickup the water ASAP because you don’t want the good wood floor to warp - linoleum floors are fine but be careful with wood floors, and remember that the Bissell 9500 ProHeat 2X Clean Shot Uprights Clean on the pull back, you squeeze the trigger, dispense water, the machine will use the scrubbing brushes to clean and the vacuum will pickup the water all in one smooth motion. For further information please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in the area or the yellow pages or contact the Bissell Factory @ the information listed below: http://www.bissell.com/By Phone Customer Service: (800) 237-7691 Hours: M-F 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. ET Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET Thanks,Don – The Vac Man Go Ahead.Use Us.
