Remote control not working

My husband was watching tv last night, then this morning he tried to use the direct tv remote and could not adjust the volume or turn the tv off like he could before. Then he took the regular tv remote and can not adjust volume, none of the buttons will work, tried to change the batteries and nothing. Tried to program universal remote to use with that tv but nothing, Can anyone help me? We purchased this tv more than a year ago and does not have warranty anymore..... Thank you
