Problem connecting to the net

I can connect my computer wired straight to the modem. But when i try to connect it straight to the router (lynksis wrt54gr), it doesn't recognize the router even thought we already connected another two computers previously to the same router (one wireless and one wired). Hw can i make the computer recognize this router>? We already give it all the ip addresses etc from the original but still doesn't recognize the router for some reason.

Make sure your computer has a dynamic IP address. If the computer still cant get IP address from router, try to reset the router. Press and hold the reset button of the router for 30 seconds while the power is on. After that please check if your computer is getting a valid IP address from router (192.168.1.xx). If your are able to get valid IP address, try this link to configure for your Internet connection.

You router may be set to be DHCP enabled so that it allocates the ip addresses automatically to each pc, so check that the pc's network card with connection problems is set in the properties on the TCP/IP line is set to obtain an ip address automatically. You can also try, Start>run then type ipconfig /flushdns to clear the pc ip address and dns. and restart pc. Lastly if you pc is both network cabled and wireless, ensure one or the other is dissabled as this can confuse the ip adress alocation.

Hello, I do not know much about troubleshooting internet connections. I just rely on Microsoft's "Diagnose Problem" option and most often than not, it works. But when I replaced our old...

Thank you for using fixya.

Being that your other computers in the network are working properly, you should switch the ip settings on your comnputer to automatically detect. That way your computer does all the routing and ip setting,

After you have set that back. Remove the power of your router, remove the power of your modem, and restart your computer.

Once your computer is back up, turn on modem, then the router.

It sounds very simple, but in most cases, it solves the problem.

Hope this information is helpful

My daughter has a lynksys router wrt54g. it is connected to a cabe modem. The wireless works great, but wired compters won't connect to the internet.

Wired Connection
1. Check your hardware connection:
Make sure that you use a straight cable and not a cross over cable. And also make sure that the cable is not broken or loose.

2. Check your hardware devices:
If you are using a hub, modem, or router on your network, make sure that they are connected properly and switched on. Sometimes, the solution might be as simple as restarting the modem/router, then your computer. You can also try connecting the Ethernet cable to another port of the router to test.

3. Check your network adapter:
Disable and enable your Network Adapter to make sure that it is functioning.

4. Obtain IP address automatically:
If you have set static IP address on your computer previously, it could be one of the reasons of why you are unable to connect to the Internet. So, you should set your computer to obtain IP address automatically. If you are not sure how to do it, we have an article here to guide you.

Wireless Connection
1. Check your wireless key:
When you connect to the wireless connection, you will be prompted for wireless key (password). So, if you have entered an invalid key, you will not be able to connect to the Internet. Therefore, make sure that you have the correct wireless key. If you are not sure whether you have the correct key, ask the person who setup your wireless network for help. OR, click here to learn how to check the wireless settings on your router to find out your wireless key.

2. Repair your Internet connection:
If you are experiencing limited or no connectivity on wireless connection, click here to learn how to repair your Internet connection on Windows.

If any more problem encounter, post or thumbs back.

Hooked up arris modem with lynksys G series router

You have to set seting from routers menu. To use it hold 15 second router restart button, that restore factory setings, then go browser http://192.168.1.1/ , and use username "admin" and password "admin" in default. There you can set setting by your connection.

Lynksys is causing high blood pressure

Hello cyndilynn

OK, my friend, don't fret. Let's find out what the skinny is. First things first...

(01) Do you have the manual for your router?
If not, you can download it from HERE.

(02) Do I understand you correctly that you are able to connect to the Internet from one of your computers and not the other WHILE using the Linksys BEFSR41 router?

Some points to clarify:
(A) Your Linksys router (connected between your cable or DSL modem and your computer(s)) and your Linksys NIC (installed in your computer) are two different animals that serve different purposes.

(B) Your router should be connected to each of your computers via "straight through" (not "cross-over") Ethernet patch cables that run from the LAN ports at the back of your router to a NIC connection on each of your computers.

(C) The NIC and the ROUTER do not have to be made by the same manufacturer (in this case Linksys). Manufacturer's NICs and ROUTERs can be mixed and matched just fine.

I suspect the issue is w/ detection of your NIC on one of your computers. I doubt the issue has anything to do w/ your router.

If that is the case, please, provide details about the two desktop computers that you have tried the Linksys NIC in (one successfully, one unsuccessfully).

(03) What operating system is each computer running?

(04) Has the computer that you have been unsuccessfull connecting to the Internet through the Linksys router ever been successfully connected to the Internet?

For now, please, answer these 4 questions and provide any other information you can think of (the more details the better). Then we'll move on to the next step.

Thank you
BJ
