Desktop keyboard keeps dying

I have checked to make sure the drivers are up to date and they are, but for the past two days the keyboard (which is a USB keyboard) will randomly stop responding. Changing USB ports does not help the issue.

Have you connected any other USB devices that could be draining power? Try to disconnect everything but your mouse and keyboard and see if the problem comes back, if this rectifies the issue get a powered USB hub to connect the rest of your devices.
Also check that the USB bandwidth and power level limits are not being exceeded, I have attached a picture

Nope, nothing else is connected via USB apart from the keyboard and mouse, and the USB bandwidth looks just like your pic, but with 5 ports available. Thank you, though.

Do you have just a bog standart keyboard or one of the lightup / gamers ones?

  • Anonymous Oct 03, 2012

    It's a standard keyboard.

Then it can only be one of 3 things. (1) keyboard is faulty - try another one.... (2) power is dropping out on usb - does the num, caps and scroll lock lights work when your keyboard dies? (3) OS issue, your may need a repair install or a fresh install of your operating system. It must be noted though if your USB ports are dropping power then this indicates a serious issue with your motherboard (check voltages in bios, some bios's have a voltage monitor. Look at the 5v supply)

Dell studio one goes to advanced menu

Try booting with only the basic hardware - remove all printers etc -
If you are having a hardware issue -and it is a sudden thing you have hardware issues.

Remove all but one memory stick and see if it boots - if now - remove the one memory stick and place the other one in. If you know you're way around - go to boot the machine and as it starts - hit the delete key and keep hitting it until it goes into the DOS mode. Check the date that is set there. If it isn't that days date set it to that day. Keep settings and continue the boot.

New wireless Logitech M320 keyboard works, but it cannot find the wireless mouse nor make it work. What do I do now?

First off, check your drivers and make sure they are up to date with your model. Next check the batteries in the mouse and keyboard, chances are if the mouse is out of juice, the keyboard may not be far behind. Thirdly, make sure you are following the correct procedures stated in the directions for "sync-ing" the mouse and keyboard with the wireless reciever!

My mouse and keyboard dont work

Make sure the drivers for each are downloaded. If you can plug a mouse and keyboard in, check Compaq for the drivers you need for the model you have. You may want to do a system restore to an earlier date.

The system won't boot up and I keep getting a keyboard error that says I need to replace my keyboard

1)chect to make sure a keyboard is in the PS2 port or usb, whichever you are used to. 2)if your computer gets past this screen but does not boot, you will need to reinstall your OS, but this will delete all your data. if your keyboard problem persists, get a different keyboard with the connector you usually use.

Keyboard driver

You don't need to udapte the driver, as it's not a driver issue. It's a settings issue.

Open the Control Panel, then select Date, Time, Language and Regional Options. Then click on Regional and Language Options. Then check to make sure these settings are correct to your location and language.

This should sort out the problem.

Let me know if it doesn't

IOGear 2-port KVM Switch (Keyboard Issue)

I have had the same problem off and on since I bought my Iogear 2-port kvm switch over a year ago. I have a DYNEX wired, multimedia, usb keyboard and a Dynex wired usb mouse. The operating system on my desktop is Windows XP, SP3 and on my laptop it's Windows XP professional.

Yesterday, my keyboard "died" on me about 8 times and each time it requires unplugging the keyboard usb cable from the switch and my laptop, rebooting, then plugging the usbs back in. Really, really frustrating and annoying. I'm not a techno guru, but I got to thinking that maybe the keyboard driver might be the culprit. I decided to go to Control Panel, clicked on Keyboard, then Hardware/Properties/Driver/Update Driver. I clicked on "update driver" and let it find one automatically. It took what seemed like a long time for it to find the driver but it found one. The device name changed to KeyMaestro P2360, the driver updated, and I noticed 2 additional files were added to the System 32 directory.

It's only been a day but so far so good. My keyboard hasn't failed yet since the keyboard driver update. I don't know if this is the solution for you or not, but it seems to be the one for me. I'll know for sure if I can through a few days without it failing again.
